I've seriously passed through the border several hundred times.
My biggest advice is, dress respectably, and answer all the questions honestly, and don't hesitate in any response. Answer with respect, and be willing. If you are riding with others, same for them. Never give them a hard time. Weeding out illegals that don't fit a hazardous profile is a smaller fish they're after. Bring all possible ID you have, including phone bills, etc. The more you are willing to show, the less they're think you'er hiding something.
Oh... if you show up sketchy on your way, looking like candy-ravers, you're going to secondary.

Don't bother crossing the border- its not worth deportation for a damn party. If its anything like Canada, you need the documentation, not some receipt, or your word that papers are in motion. My fiance had to stay put here over X-mas, while I went on to the US, cuz he was waiting on paperwork. Even I got refused once coming back to Canada, where I've lived for 6 yrs, cuz my paper had expired, and they didn't have record of any renewal. As long as you stay put in your country and paperwork is in motion, you're able to stay. Once you cross the border, you risk throwing the whole application process away.
ITS NOT WORTH IT.
Come for the next party.

The border guards are the rudest people I've ever seen in my life. They definitely abuse their authority......talk to you as if you are some piece of shit.

And thank goodness they're around or we'd have more people in the country blowing shit up and in turn having you complain that border patrol wasn't safe and secure enough.
They do what they are paid to do, and they do it well. If you don't give them any trouble, things should be fine. Would you want their job? They have to be alert on every single car they let through.
I've never once had a problem in all the years I've been going back and forth to the US. Not one, single problem, at all.
