OMG, ya’ll, but the Detroit show was better than the first night in Toronto (sorry, I didn’t see the second night in Toronto, so maybe that show was better than Detroit?).
First of all, the Masonic Temple is an amazing venue. Only one balcony instead of two, and more spaciously spread out instead of up-and-down taller like Massey Hall (can you picture that?) Sandi (my concert buddy – we actually saw the Suicide Blonde tour at Maple Leaf Gardens with the Soup Dragons opening together) and I showed up at the Box Office shortly after 8pm to pick up out separate seats, and were delighted to be offered two seats together on the aisle, on the first row of elevated seating on the main floor, about 15 rows back from the stage! Incredible seats.
The Detroit crowd had more energy than Toronto, despite the fact that Toronto is JD’s “hometown”. JD pointed out that Detroit had the highest album purchase and downloads of “Switch,” the new album. (JD also pointed out that Detroit was rumored to have better weed than Toronto, which is baloney, because everyone knows Canada has won the Cannabis cup far more often than the USA!)
And the little differences were noticeable, too - the projected light switch on the black backdrop in Toronto was from side to side, and not up and down (like a light switch, duh!) as it was in Detroit, so they one-upped us there, too, I’m afraid. Even the stage was better, there was a ramp surrounding the stage so JD and others could run up behind Jon the drummer.
And now that I had two performances to compare, I honestly believe that JD was nervous in Toronto, and probably feeling under the weather still from his illness days before. His inhibitions were gone, and as my friend Sandi put it she “never wanted to be a mic stand so badly in her life!” (I’ll even throw in the speaker, too, that guy is one sexy bastard). He had way more sex appeal than on the Monday night in Toronto (maybe, too, because his parents were there?).
The only downside was that JD screwed up the words to “Disappear,” by repeating the third verse twice and missed the second verse. Forgivable. He’s the new guy. And as a sign held up by a lady probably in her mid 40’s so aptly put it, “JD Fortune is an excellent choice.” (The lady had two other signs, too. One which read “We will never forget Michael” and informed us that she was “An INXS fan since 1983 from Indiana).
**Edit** forgot to add that even crossing the border on the way back I follwed my friend Sandi and wasn't even asked for my passport because she works in Detroit and lives in Windsor and it was her "regular" border guard. Next time I'm smuggling... Hahaha!
And I’m glad to report that on the long drive home to Toronto after the show I didn’t get abducted by aliens (did you know that if you can’t see the headlights behind you or taillights in front on the highway that’s when the aliens get you! Hahaha!)
