normal trance i'd put as something like

Robert Miles - Fable

progressive trance i'd put as something like

RMB - Deep Down Below (Airscape Mix)

but then again, i don't think there's that much diference between them =p

Hello!

My idea of a progressive trance tune is one where different elements (percussion, vocal samples etc.) are brought in gradually and repeated over and over until the tune finally reaches it peak around the 8 minute mark. Basically they're just one long build up as opposed to 'normal' trance tunes that are just intro - buildup - chorus - buildup - chorus - outro. Some progressive tunes don't even reach a peak though. Those I class as BAD progressive tunes!

Examples....ummmmm.... anything by Sasha, Breeder, Origin I'd call progressive trance. Normal trance is typically Ferry Corsten, Armin etc.

Trance alone refers to the older German roots of the sound, nowadays the only thing that exists under the trance name is progressive. Trance refers to pre-1997 wwhen the sound was strictly brief synth lines repeated throughout tracks with only minimal changes in melody, putting listeners into a trance-like state, where the name originated. Robert Leiner, Sun Electric, and Aphex Twin were the originators...

Quality progressive trance tends to go two ways, the deeper, slower, purer sound that the likes of Nick Warren, Sasha and Digweed spin, to the faster more energetic sound that Pvd, Picotto, etc, spin that is considered more progressive house.

Progressive trance also refers to cheesy commercial garbage that has become so popular...eg Alice Deejay, ATB, etc.

Hope this clarifies things alittle.

I posted this a while back ago on another forum. I believes it gives any novice a good base to work off of as far as telling the differances between the major sub generas of trance. |)

Check out Armin Van Buuren - Basic Instinct cd. Look at the difference between the 1st cd and the second cd. The 1st cd I would say is just plain trance. Now the second cd, that is what I would call progressive trance. Download both and you will see what I mean.

Question

yeah, sasha, digweed, PvD more of a progressive crowd and I think that Christopher Lawrence and Sandra Collins are more of a regular type trance. Even though collins is more likely to go into some progressive house and hard house.
