trance and techno leads

when it comes to trance leads ,riffs, and melodies i am pretty cool with making them.

but not techno

so my question is i want to make a techno track so when it comes to techno leads, riffs etc but since techno and trance are so close in genres would a trance riff over a techno groove sound like trance?

cause thats what im trying to avoid.

then what would be the best bet to make techno riffs sound like techno and not trance .

thanks

They both use different chords and progressions. Trance is meant to be very melodic and have an emotional impact, so your melodies will be based on transitions and choosing chords that sound epic or uplifting. Techno tends to be much darker and cold as opposed to emotional. Try some odd key changes and note jumps. Also, I find that mid-eastern scales work well with those genres.

Techno is more about random stabs and grooves, like house. I could be completely wrong but there is little or no melody in techno? Unless you're talking about tech-trance or tech-somethingelse :P

Well house can be very very melodic.
Techno on the other hand is more fx/perc oriented.
Tech trance is melodic.

Techno is about effects and sampling tricks. Many trance producers seem to have no end of trouble with techno due to being in the groove of spending countless hours on leads and epic melodies. If you want to make techno, throw all of that away and just start screwing around, creating the weirdest effects and grooves possible.

Actually, as a follow up to that-

do any of you guys know a good streaming online station for techno? Like, the equivalent of ETN or DI.fm, but for current techno?

what about a synth

i know techno is pretty much sample and tek style synth oriented
and most of the sounds are just mangled.

but is there one synth that would be perfect to make these sounds
like something besides the moog ,rather than just getting some samples and layering them but rather making your own sounds from a analog synth.

Trance lead = harmonic
Techno lead = inharmonic

For techno, try a sequence of notes that do NOT sound well together, but are in sync with the beat. This way you have a groove, but don't have the warm fluffy emotions associated with the loop because it's inharmonic.

there's also progressive with little or no melody
there's also melodic techno with pads n leads (cfr mark broom)

just spend a lot more time on your drumsloops and efx and best thing to do is to actually listen to some choons and analyse them.

I meant to refer to general progressive trance when I spoke of the harmonics. You're right, some techno sounds melodic, and some trance sounds like a horrible circus nightmare.

I was referring to "harmonic", as in a series of notes that make up chords that sound consonant to our ears and pleasing to our brains. I wasn't refering to melodies. Note: a melody can be harmonic or inharmonic.
