[prog trance] jex - Warm Spell [192 full]

A little something I whipped up during a short warm spell in the midst of the extended winter (curse you, Punxsutawny Phil!!!). It's a little dark, but it's got a lot of the atmosphere that was present in Lovesong.

Mixing may be a bit off, because I mixed this on headphones.

jex - Warm Spell
10:22 | 192 kbps | 14.2MB | 140 BPM
Made in FLStudio6
Synths used: Synth1, Tweakbench Pressure, 3xOsc, Tweakbench Padawan, AudioRealism Bassline.

Enjoy.

yea nice filterin. great percs, bassline a bit too standard imo.. but it works. thats what its about, so I shouldnt complain lol.
really like the high synths when they come in around 1:50..
with what did you make those? nice padlike lead in the background.. everything blends nice with the bass now. really cool fx !!!
I like the the beat break in 7:07!! great track, well mastered one of the few progs I like !

Listening now.

I like it so far Jex, it's definately putting me in a trance.

But I find that bass in the beginning a bit too simple, and maybe a bit too repetative... however as it progresses it does "fit" in better.

/me listens to jex-Warm Spell [02:04 of 10:22m/192Kbps/44KHz]

Yea, with that other effect under it, sounds much more whole.

/me listens to jex-Warm Spell [04:38 of 10:22m/192Kbps/44KHz]

The strings, and the that resonent synth sound pretty awesome together.

Granted... you did call it progressive. It's pretty dark though. I find that bassline a bit repetative, but I understand that is what you're going for and it sounds good.

The mixing is okay as far I'm concerned (granted i'm listening to it in my Sony 7506s). Kick sounds okay.

Your break-beat break felt a bit awkward just because not a lot changed with it. Like, you had a little break beat section, but nothing else in the song really changed with it to give it a good sense of a "break down."

Overall I still think it's a good track. A bit too repatative for my taste, and while that is the goal, I think your could have changed it up a bit more.

Your stuff always impresses me so keep it up.

hey

little distortion in the intro...

pad thing sounds pretty weak, bass is pretty bland as stated before.

interesting fx goin on. cool gated-panned rythm. pretty dark track so far like you said...

interesting melody, the gtr sounding synth thingy. good sound on it. it's a bit to much in the background tho i think...you could put it up front.

the bass seems to take up most of the attention i think. covers the other synths.

303 sounding thing is really dope. thats awesome.

bassline works now i guess.

another nice soundin synth around 6.00 or whatever.

well, im not a progressive fan so i dunno why i even checked this out. is all progressive supposed to be so long like this? with several diffrent central themes? anyway, nice production!

Takkra: Thanks. That high sound is made with 3xOsc. I generally use that for the more subtle synths, since those don't need to be so interesting. Plus it takes up less CPU. In a song with... seven or so VSTs running, It's good to have some cuttable corners.

The bass is pretty standard, yeh, but I like that rhythm. It was actually inspired by BT - Mercury and Solace. It felt better to me in terms of what the track needed.

DJFreaq: Break beats are a weird thing for me. I don't like to make them partucularly extended or different from the rest of the track. They only feel natural to me when they alter the character of the track solely through the change in the kick drum. I've never been very good at the "breaks section" layout. I also didn't want to go for a "breakdown" in that section, just a slight dip in energy before the next section. I see it kinda like a semicolon, indicating the completion of a thought, but the next thought will expound on that last one.

Glad you liked it, though. Thanks for the review.

ASFSE: I know about the clipping in the intro. This is actually pretty tame to how it was. I'm currently trying to think of ways to subdue it further.

The pad is actually a lot like the bass in this case. I just didn't want it to be very obtrusive. I suppose I could add a few more layers to it in the intro.

You're right about the melody. That's one of the mixing problems I was talking about. I need to fix that one.

Progressive isn't all this long. Progressive is actually where the whole 7:30 standard started to become apparent. It certainly explored more than one theme, though. Most trance has more than one theme, in fact, moving in a sort of In V C V C Out format I just switched the verses and choruses in my track.
