I actually decided to upgrade to the MOTU so I could put a firewire card in my laptop and use the MOTU, but I may go for something more portable in the future.

If I were to get a PC card I would probably go for the Echo Indigo DJ, just because I have heard good things about them and have had good experience with the Echo Mia I have as well.

i haven't noticed any major differences in latency between pci/pcmia/firewire interfaces. supposedly the transfer rate is supposed to be faster with firewire, but in my experiences i've seen the same latency times in regards to the buffer setting. although i don't have one, i'm a fan of the presonus firebox (fw).

Is it worth getting a firewire pcmi card to get an external firewire soundcard? I know its a very vague question but i think you get my point.

It depends on what you need as far as I/O. If you are only buying a card for the DSP/ASIO then it makes sense to just get a PCMIA card, but if you need more than a few inputs/outputs it is definitely worth getting the firewire PCMCIA card an external souncard.

Yea. USB sucks because of the extra bus it has to go though on your MOBO.

Firewire. Is a more direct route "I guess" since I'm no expert in specifically how it works.

*looks at USB Digidesign MBox*

Such a pile of dung. I only have it so I can use ProTools. Otherwise it's a paper weight.

AGH I hate latency.

USB Doesn't add latency, but bandwidth is shared over all connected usb devices. So if you use multiple usb devices at once your audio could sound very bad. (not to mention the risk of having usb 1.0 slots on your pc, in that case your audio would definetely suck).

Fireware has 5ms of latency by default. That's due to the way the ahrdware is built. On the other hand you'll always have full bandwidth because the bandwidth isn't shared in this case.
