Andrew Kelly - Untitled 001 EP
Andrew Kelly's tracks seem to always go that little bit further, strive for that extra inch of perfection. This can easily be seen by the journey he takes us on in "She Thinks She's Underground", or the raw emotion portrayed in "Tear". He is certainly one who many have been keeping a keen eye on lately, myself included. His latest release comes from Composure Records, and goes for a minimal sound. While it may seem simplistic on the surface, the intricacy heard in the original and all of the remixes is a credit to every name involved with the release.
The Original Mix may require multiple listens before it really begins to open up. The structure is quite interesting, as most of the elements reside in the higher ranges, with minimal (mind the pun) elements in the lower range. On paper this may seem like an unbalanced composition, but it amazingly works and creates a very interesting effect which is quite difficult to describe. It all fits together very tightly, and fans of a more minimal sound will be pleasantly surprised at how melodic the genre can actually be!
Hungarian producer Retroid is another name which is appearing quite a lot lately. His mix goes for more of a progressive outlook, and hence toughens up the percussion outfit and adds a strong bassline. Elements from the original float in and out, and a strong mood is built up. The mix provides a nice alternative for those who prefer a more traditional approach, but still want something slightly different.
Conceptual throws down a twisted interpretation of the original, keeping the minimal vibe, but introducing some tougher elements. A squelching lead takes the main stage and carries throughout the track. The remix has a much more twisted feel to it than the original, and isn't afraid to get dirty and let its hair down. For those who love their tracks to be off the wall, this is the mix to go for.
The final remix is provided by Grid System. The most notable element of the remix is its interesting kick pattern, creating an off-time sort of breakbeat. The high-ranged melodies and effects are retained, giving the remix a very airy feel which is contrasted by the tough kick and lower-ranged effects. A highly unique and refreshing remix which ends the release magnificently.
To say the least I was very impressed by every track featured here. Andrew's original set the ball rolling by pushing the boundaries, and then the remixers took the elements and provided mixes which continue the trend and create a truly unique release. This is another track which backs me up in emphasising the diversity of Andrew's work, and demonstrates why everyone reading this should be looking out for his future releases, of which I'm positive there will be many. There is also talk of an exciting release of his on Proton Music, so stay tuned for more info on that!
