The new NFL rules

The labor agreement, extended several times since it was agreed to in 1992, has another two years to run. But 2006 would be the last year with a salary cap.

There would be no cap next year, but also many changes in the rules, including some the players find unappealing - six years for a player to get to free agency instead of four and no minimum amount that teams have to spend.

So your thoughts? Will Nfl be like European football, the richest team will win the titles ?

I don't think it will go that far. Probably some compromise will be reached and the union will force the nfl to have one trial season without free agency before the year 200x. For a few years with no cap, money would buy championships, but middle market teams would build cohesive units which could beat the big names, similar to what's happened in baseball.

As long as the owners and players are lining their pockets and people are in the stands, i dont think they ultimately care about the game.

Right now one of the biggest sticking points is the issue on revenue sharing, and it's impact on the salary cap size. Like it's been mentioned before, if the owners and players keep getting richer (this does seen slightly paradoxical :P) then everything'll run smooth.

What I do love about the NFL is the parity with most teams - yeah, there sure are some stinkers, but they don't remain shitty for too long - either through the draft or free agency, teams always end up getting better in the end. With this reasoning, I totally expect the Texans to be better next year.

And even if there is no salary cap there will be more NFL teams fighting for the Super Bowl than teams fighting for the championship in european leagues.

but i guess this is sad news to hear that after they made some kind of agreement, paul taglibue wants to retire being the comish .

he's had his trials and tribulations in the past, but i think he did a fine job doing whatever was necessary to keep the league under control.

wasn't taglibue one of the primary advocates to remove helmet to helmet tackling and lasso tackling on the shoulderpads ? then again, because of those rules, we have those cheesy penalties on the quarterbacks .. hey .. we win some .. we lose some, right ?
