For Rent: 30G Aquarium, must have fins

So I set up my aquarium again yesterday. I used to have a school of Piranhas, bu they outgrew the 30 gallon unit and now live in an 80 gallon at my buddy's place.

I'm thinking about what to put in there...it's freshwater.

Anybody here have a particualr favourite, fish-wise?

I used to rear an Arowana. Beautiful fish.Died on me when I went on holiday for a week. Would catch geckos and lizards to feed him.

Then i reared Discus. Had a mating discus that would lay her eggs, but the male discus did not fertilize it..so the eggs died and the mom ate it all up. The mom kept on laying eggs and i have tried with various mates(had like 7 of them) but either they're all female or the males have just weak sperm.

I have a 55g African Cichlid tank. Their bad ass for freshwater and really active. For a 30g, look into Lake Tanganyika as their a bit smaller, and very colorful like saltwater fish. You can make a reef setup with rocks all the way up to the surface of the tank, as that matches their natural habitat.

Arowanas get over 8ft long...not a good choice for a 30gal.

I have an empty aquarium that's been sitting there for years just gathering dust. I'd like to put something in it but it just seems so complicated.

Former residents of my 30G:

Giant Danios

Black Ghost Knife

Green Spotted Puffer

Clown Loach

Iridescent Shark

Blue Lobster

...among others. The Danios were fantastic.

I guess if you wanna rear a baby arowana its big enough. I usually buy em small cause bigger arowanas are VERY expensive. I raised a silver arowana to about maybe 15 inches in length??

but 8ft long?? Either that arowana is super fit to grow that big or you've mistaken a species to be an arowana family.. I highly doubt so.

The biggest arowana I've seen was about 5 ft.

For discus, i had 2 30g tanks for the 7 fishes..so i'd say about 4 discus per tank would be ok. The alpha males can be very territorial..so you tend to separate them and partner him with a female.

yes there have been some that big, but typical length is 4-5ft...which still puts them just a tad too big for a 30g tank.
