can't tell if I've got too much going on. I'm trying a lot of different instruments to get the right atmosphere. I've got a sitar and kalimba and even a banjo in there... and I'm trying to integrate the chinese string instrument that starts at the end of the sample to get some progression going but I can't seem to get it right. maybe it's just too much. any suggestions appreciated.

just from the desctription , i think it sounds like you have way too much stuff in the same frequency range.

well, it flows nice, and doesnt sound as crowded as i thought it would, but those frequencies being so similar , you cant differentiate all of the instruments.

Why not try making one instrument play some notes of another ones pattern, added to its own, and remove the second all together?

this sounds great, not crowded at all. well... crowded in the sense of clashing/masking/etc. the sitar and banjo do kind of sound too similar though. you could try panning them left and right, not hard-panned, maybe just like half way or something. just enough to give them their own space, but not so much that you completely separate them.

thanks for the tips. this is actually my first shot at making a song.

I was kind of hesitant on the banjo but I was having trouble with the progression of the song and it seemed like it added some sense of progression, although it does clutter the track. I'll try panning it or cutting the frequency range to make it more subtle... or maybe just take it out altogether.

not sure I understand what you're saying here. you mean have 2 seperate instruments and then transition the notes from track 1 to track 2 so I end up with only one?

combine the two patterns to create a third, and use only one instrument for it

Well, the instruments play off each other pretty well. I'd go with the pan, perhaps EQ up the banjo or whatever in frequency, and down the sitar.

That wind instrument is out of key with the rest of the song as well.


Get the GSNAP pitch corrector and use midi to put the sample in the right key.

Only problem is it's in an eastern style scale... so it's not going to sound as cool as it would if it were alone... but it can't stay in the mix like that.

I'm thinking I'll just take it out of the song altogether. I really like the instrument but I don't think it would belong even if I was able to correct the pitch. another problem is that the refill only gave Dr. REX preset loops for the instrument, so I can't alter the chords or anything.
