Producing after consuming "herbal remedy" - your comments please!!!

I hope you have checked this post out despite the stupid title.

It's a serious point really.

A mate of mine used to be a bit of a dope monster and having spent years obliterating practically every single brain cell and frying his brain, he made a conscious decision to knock it on the head for the sake of his sanity.

Thing is, during the 3 years that hes been producing dance music, he has had the occasional slip up but to his surprise, or rather to no surprise, he finds that after having a relaxing spliff or 5 he finds it far easier to come up with ideas for tunes. particularly melodies. So he's left in a bit of a dilemma, does he keep on plodding away producing with a clear head or does he go back on the old wacky backy to aid the creative process. Your comments on how you feel about the benifits or drawbacks of using herbal remedies for these purposes would be appreciated.

PS: I am only posting this message because my friends state of mind is my main concern. (if you know what I mean!!!)

your "friend"?? suuuuuuuuure

anyway.... tough call man... marijuana is legal in parts of the world for a reason.... its not THAT harmful all things considering

if this were hard drugs the answer would be forget it

since this isn't about hard drugs... hmmm... does "your friend" have any aspirations in life other than producing?

does he want to be the next snoop dogg (who apparently smokes 20 a day)?

or does he have high hopes of becoming a chartered accountant...

look to the future and make the decision that best favors where you are going and where you want to be

To be honest with you... I understand Totally about the ideas flowing a little better. But not always at all. Sometimes it can actually just get you lazy and just walk away from the keyboard. I find that maybe try to limit yourself during producing. To each his own.. Everyone has a different opinion and effect of the "herbal remedy'' to some people it doesnt affect them as much anyway..

It's cheating.

No such thing as cheating.

The danger is you wind up listening to a flanger for 4 hours and get nothing done.

I usually work left brain / right brain.

Get mangled, get creative, come back sober as a judge and assess what carnage I inflicted whilst not paying attention. ;-)

Horses for courses, but I'd be careful of herbal suppliments of any kind..

same here...although sparkin a doob may sometimes act as a catalyst for creativity, there have been times that i've spent hours looping the same 4 bars, editing my synth patch, playing with effects and levels, all to wake up the next day to a cacophonous mess!...then i'd have to go back, copy and paste the midi to a new channel, and start designing from scratch...

although u may come up with a cool melody, nice drum patterns and structural ideas, the end product may not be of the highest quality

I don't have the co-ordination or speed to do it when drunk. Herbs? Pffft, who needs them.

I would be interested in hearing some of these "herb melodies." Are they super-gangsta... or are they supa-frog?

I'm not gonna get into what's right and wrong here, I could but I simply wont because I don't have the time for it right now

but of course some people will get more creative after a spliff or two but I don't think it's the spliff itself that gives you the extra ideas. It's just a way to get them out of your head. It probably works more like a catalyst for the ideas.

He could probably find a more healthy way to get his ideas out frmo his head though, dunno what it could be but I can't believe smoking pot is the only way, I just can't.
