Hey guys i want to buy a new system that helps me with the production thing. I want it to be very fast wut dou guys use in ur systems
AMD or Intel??
and which of them is the faster and ideal one for music production

This is probably the only question that gets asked regularly that doesnt piss me off :P

Computers are always changing and shit, but if two people ask it consecutively then yeah someone gets a flamming.

Anyway. I think you'll find msot people will recommend AMD. Main reason is because the hypertransport bus is better than the Intel thing. And also, Intel are not true 64-bit yet. So the new windows wont run on them well. If a computer shop tries to tell you that Intel EMT64 = 64bit, slap them on the face with your doodle, theyre wrong.

1GB of decent brand memory (corsair, kingmax etc.) should get u going. Read into RAID also, that speeds things up a lot, like playing around with big wav files etc. Make sure you dont get integrated SOUND OR VIDEO. Good audio interface for a beginner is an Audiophile 24/96 or that new one (24/192 or something?).

Dont get a creative soundcard, you'll regret it (theyre expensive too).

You'll need at least 3 hd's to have benefits from raid because with the most known consumer level, level 0 you have doubled (assuming you have 2 hds) the chance to lose all your data. This is at least annoying in normal use but for producing this is a drama off course. For audio use none of the single levels are really useful for audio except level 1 but here you have half the capacity of a normal setup. Imo the best solution for audio use is the multiple level 01 or 10. You do need 4 hd's in this setup. If you would be interested a raid setup make sure you buy an expensive hardware controller to get the full potential.

I've been running RAID0 for about 4 years now without any problems :P
U should be able to tell when a HD is on its way out anyway.

If you're paranoid u can always just burn all your project files to dvd every now and then.

dezma: regarding raid 0, well yes in theory with 2 HDDs you double the risk of loosing data but seriously, have you ever even heard of just pure data loss when it comes to brands like seagate and western digital?
I mean shure HDD's crash every now and then but it doesn't happen very often (I've never had a HDD crash and I've been using my computers daily since 98)

Raid 0 with two Raptor disks is pure nastyness BUT you will hardly use that capacity while producing music unless you work with things like sampled steinways consisting of like 5gig samples and such :P

In my DAW,

AMD64 165 Dual core Opteron overclocked to 2.5ghz per core. Fully stable. 1 gb RAM (could def use 1gig more though) Running cubaseSX 3.1 with multi processor support.

I use a Creative X-Fi and I am very pleased with the ASIO result so works for me

With respect to RAID protection, they only protect you agains one thing and one thing only.. hardwae failue. If your OS barfs and screws up your FAT / NTFS / AFS / file table your data is a goner regardless..

You need to make regular backups. Every one says it, then everyone gets burned, then they make a few and stop again, and get burned again...

The Opteron is better than the Athlon. It has an extra 512mb cache over what the athlon has per core. Plus it's memory controller is better and it has more hypertransport links than the Athlon. And last of all the Opterons overclock better. It's a great cpu.

Yes AMD64's are very good for music production. Their dual core technology is still better than Intel's although that gap is closing very fast now. As far a load, what do you mean? how many effects and softsynths? to get some idea look at my bench mark results running at stock 1.8ghz dual core and cubaseSX stuff.(4 instances of every cubaseSX synth running total=16synths, 13xroomworks reverbs,5xreverbA's. running a continuous midi loop. At 2.5ghz it gets even better. Also I have a screen shot of the arithmetic benchmark scores in Sandra with my DAW overclocked to 2.5ghz per core.

Note: I've found that I can push the Opteron running sx3.1 with multi processor support to 80% load without any artifacts and stable. Past 85% and I start having pops and dropouts no matter what the buffer settings on the card. card is maudio 2496 audiophile.

Is it seriously that much of an issue?

I havent really reached 100% cpu before (without doing something stupid anyway :P) unless i changed the sample rate from 44,100->96,000 or something.
