No porn under Labour govt.

quote:

No pr0n under Labor
Liam Getreu

In a monumental backflip, Opposition leader Kim Beazley today announced that if elected, Labor would force ISPs to filter violent or sexual graphic content from internet connections.

The plan is a polar reversal on Labor's previous policy. Former shadow minister for IT & Telecommunications, Kate Lundy, previously told Whirlpool: "Labor believes the Report's recommendation to increase internet regulation by forcing all Australian internet service providers (ISPs) to filter all of their content is unworkable. The cost this would place on ISPs would be prohibitive, and internet speeds would be significantly reduced."

Under the new plan, individual subscribers would be able to "opt-in" to access unrestricted content if they wanted to. Kim Beazley says it is "too hard" for average families to have to figure out how to install and configure internet filtering software on home PCs. He claims a similar system already operates in parts of Europe, including the UK.

The plan follows other ill-fated efforts by political parties, including one from Labor to provide free content blockers to Australian households and one from the conservative party Family First before the last election.

Efforts to rid the Australian internet of porn have generally been costly but ineffective political exercises. In 2003, former Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts Senator Richard Alston distributed more than 32,000 fridge magnets to callers concerned about Internet porn.

Anyway, discussion. What does everyone think?

IMO, this is what happens when the previous generation gets out of touch with technology and society. Has our society become this stifled that parents cant, god forbid, discuss pornography and sex with their children? Shits me up the wall, this is becoming like China internet shield.

Setting aside the merits of the idea (or lack thereof), implementing it would be impossible. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

It's frustrating that this country's federal Labor party keeps doing such silly voter-alienating things. Regardless of which party you support, having two competitive parties keeps things on a more even keel. Watching one party flop around like a fish on a pier only gives the other that much more freedom to do as they like without fear of losing popular support.

I think they underestimate just how many people are actually closet porn junkies .. appealing to the general public by saying they want to implement something like this to fish for votes will get them nowhere.

i think its shit to punish everyone coz parents are too stupid/lazy/incompetent to supervise their children\'s surfing habits. since when did the government\'s responsibility become baby sitting?

i wouldn't say that, look at commie countries controlling access...

that said, they can block it to a certain degree, but there'd be ways around it.

is it really feasable though? no.... major headache for ips's

and i'm guessing, if they were wanting to introduce it, it'd be like for all of australia except the ACT... *rollseyes*

China does it but whats the rate of pay there compared to Australia, huge difference, it would be a massive blow out in all affected areas of IT as people would be constantly moving files around in different ways... they should do it the other way around, if people want to filter porn or violent content then sign up with a ISP which supports it..

i'm guessing the way it would be done is for isp's to just block off particular ip's, i dont see monitoring individual packets as feasable. hello proxy!

ofcourse, this will probably just lead to future censorship and control - today it's introducing some control to "protect our children", etc etc. Then tomorrow, fist of stalin! "internet is bad... no free speech for yuo".

*shrugs*
Dunno why they're trying at all, considering past history with such an attempt, and its non-feasibility

You know what, we should just ban water so people stop drowning in it

if the general public knew about these plans by Labour....

there was a comment on that article that raises the issue of what is considered pornography, and who makes those decisions
(Ministry of sound, anyone?)

This is pretty extreme, its really just an example of an attempt to get votes, its pretty nuts but then again so is john howard. Theres no middle ground really.

I also didnt realise you can filter broadband, over such a wide audience i mean.
