At first you might have to but at some point it just starts happening automatically.

no, you don't need to, in beat matching... but in phrase matching you might do it sometimes, but it's usually counting up to 4

My question, something along the same lines is, How can people count the amount of bars remaining.

Eg, if you have to release a song 4 bars before the end of the chorus that's playing or whatever it might be.. How can you time it perfectly?

i'm guessing it's one of those practise things again

It's just about time

At First I used to count from 1 to 32

then I started to cound 1,2,3,4 (8 times)

try to understand the music in 4 beats.

now I don't count, I just know when it's going to happen.

you just get to feel it.

There's usually somekind of indication that it's about to change phrase, like a reversed crash, some effect, growl, rolling kicks, etc. That's what I look for, and I don't have to count the beats.

well if you start counting at the beginning or the chorus, or the phrase, then when you have 4 bars (16 beats), you throw it on the 17 beat, and you will get it in time.

Well, after a while you just know. It's instinct really.

If there is a part of a song, say for about 2 minutes, and there is only a 4-bar loop playing, whitout crashes or other indications, I still know where to start the second track to get them perfectly in line. You just know.

I guess you start counting subconciously after a while or something. You feel the tune. You feel the build-up.

If it is a track I listen to for the first time, I most often know how long the first break is, before it starts. If it's a 16 bar break, or if it's a 32 bar break, or a 24 bar break for that matter. There is a subtle indication as to how long it will be. The same goes for intros, and all the other things that builds up a track. Of, course, I might not always know, but mostly.

Exactly thats what I do. I used to count, and I would be on time more, but now I feel it and sometimes when I really concentrate I get it right on, but other times I don't. I think it depends on the tune, and how well I know it. I've been trying to mix progressive lately so it's a bit different then trance, trance seemed much easier to count phrases and beats, but with time, i'll get it right with proggy stuff too. Haha I was SO good with mixing trance, and now when I go to record a mix with progressive, I just suck, and it lowers my confidence in my mixing ability, even though I know if I were to make a trance mix, it'd be like 80% right, where right now with prog, it's like 50 or 60% right..

I think I know what you mean. And at that point, I think it all comes down to knowing the song and where exactly specific things are going to happen.

I never count anything, all by feel. I've been listening to this music enough that I pretty much just know...even if I've never heard the track before...once you get used to the structure, things just happen at their right times.
