Definitely not wackery.
The future? We'll see. The talent to create an instrument and the talent to make music with one are not interdependent.

Though I wouldn't say it's the next big thing, they've definitely created a great concept. Combining this technology with a live performance with gear or Ableton could be extremely powerful... however, what they have now simply seems like too much skipping around... and the videos are cool... but could give people siezures
What I think... this technology needs to be fine tuned and then combined with other music standards... but won't cut it as a stand alone technology... Perhaps this concept can develop into other things...

Exactly.
When MIDI and sampling first came out it opened up a whole new gendre of music.
When this starts morphing and the technology changes, it might not even look the same; take EDM today and early Kraftwerk for example.
It could also just die a horrible death and just be written up as experimentation in the archives of the everchanging audio landscape...
