Queston for SSL Users :-)

SSL users, please devote 1 min for a noob... (ive googled yes). Ive emailed Rane and Serato but still got no reply (( (lazy bastards ))
1. Does the SSL "scratchamp" make any purpose rather than just decoding timecoded vinyls. I mean can it function like a general USB external soundcard (like M-Audio Audiophile) and stuff. Would be great, cause if I want to produce tracks, I wont have to by a seperate ext.sound card..
and another thing..
2. how long does in takes for the timecoded vinyl and needle (say Stanton 680HP or Shure M44-7) to wear out and need replacement. i dont even have i clue cause i never used vinyl tts and related stuff...just plain trance & prog mixing and standart scratchy cueing...approx how long?? how long do they live anyways ????

thanks

1. The SSL Scratchamp only functions to decode the timecoded vinyl. You can consider the mp4 though, which is basically an external soundcard with simple mixer functions.

http://www.rane.com/mp4.html

2. This really depends...typical needle wear before needing replacement for trance djs I would place at somewhere between 8-10 months maybe? Don't quote me on this one though. As for the serato vinyl, i'm guessing u can use that for at least a year without noticing anything. Replacements don't cost much either. People also tend to forget that SSL comes with timecoded CDs, which don't wear out for a good while unless you mishandle the CDs.

About the needle wear, I can't see why it would be any different than regular record wear, with that said, I bought Serato the other day, and my needles (Ortofon Concordes) are OLD, I was considering replacing them , but when I loaded up Serato, they are picked up 100% perfect.

Awesome program , I'm loving it.

If you get cue burn on the records you can move the spot where the music starts past that onto a good spot of vinyl, so I imagine it takes quite awhile before the control records need to be replaced.

Theirs a mic input that will allow you to record audio onto your computer, its easy enough to configure it to rip a record though its not possible to record your sets using it as it stops recording the moment that you change a track.

I was in a similar situation and was going to invest in some new needles but a mate asked me what kind of signal i was getting from the needles i already have, as with you i was getting 100%! So i said fuck that, why bother getting new needles.

Also, you don't have to worry about what needles you get as long as they track properly I'm nearly considering getting scratch needles next time so the tracking is improved (not that it needs to be improved) and record wear doesn't really matter at a 10'er a vinyl..

Just to back up your point

I dunno if thats a restriction on PCs, but Serato can go lower than that, I have mine at 4ms on my iMac, it can probably go lower, but its fine as is.

That's more then enough! the gig of ram is nice to have as well. And your processor speed is fine as well.

Just incase you didn't think that would be enough..
