need help with advice for a friend please!!

hey guys
so this friend of mine is having some serious issues with her roommate and is looking for a solution asap...

her roommate is possibly the most irresponsible and laziest person anyone could ever meet, doesnt know how to help herself or take anything into her own hands...she lives like a slob, she is rude and just doesn't care about anything that goes on unless it's important to her.

My friend has a place to live this coming September, but is looking for a solution sooner but a couple problems arise...if she finds a new place, she can't break the lease on the new place she already has for september, and her current landlord just doesn't care at all about the situation.

Is there some kind of legal action she can take very soon? It is starting to effect her health both mentally and physically and its bringing her grades down as well because she cannot concentrate on anything much anymore...

any advice help is appreciated!
thanks!

if hygeine is a problem, ur friend should clean up the roomies mess and throw out a million valuable things of hers while at it with the excuse tahtshe was just cleaning up

(make sure ur friend doenst have any of her own valuables in sight that the roomie may decide to throw out to take revenge)

Legal action for a roommate that's a slob? Most likely not. Unless you call the Health Department, but that would have to be a pretty serious case of slobbiness (is that a word?).

Only 1 roommmate though? That sounds suspiciously like residence at uni or college. In situations like that you can take it to the housing authority on campus and they will deal with the problem roommate, issuing warnings and the like or just move your friend to a different room. There's only like 2 weeks of classes left anyways. Is the roommate going home for the summer? If so, problem solved.

If it's a private residence, I would recommend mentioning something to the landlord. I'm sure he/she would like to know what kind of shape someone else is keeping his/her house in.

Then file a complaint with the municipal housing authority smartypants!

If you have a doctor's note substantiating your claim, that it is indeed affecting your physical health, I'm sure the landlord would take it a bit more seriously. And no landlord likes going through Small Claims or Landlord/Tenant tribunal. Giant pain in the ass. And they always give more rights to the tenant. He or she will want to avoid that guaranteed. I was just trying to address a more amicable solution but hey, if he wants to not care then he has to deal with the repercussions of it!

OH! You can also file a complaint with the off-campus housing authority at whichever school she is at. That means that whenever new potential tenants look at the listing for the house she is currently at, they will also have the option of reading landlord reviews. If he has a big stain on his record at the school, it's not going to bode well for attaining future tenants. You can always you know, "mention" to him that this is a reasonable course of action if you know, he "doesn't care" about the situation.

Who is the official renter? Also is there an official sub-lease contract? If not, there will probably be little chance of resolving these issues before September.

If the roomie is just being a total slob, just throw all the crap she leaves around the house onto her bed. So if she leaves a pile of potato chips somewhere, dump them under her covers. She leaves bags around the house, dump them back on her bed. That usually does the trick, but if it doesn't you still had fun doing it

if she isnt on the lease at all she can leave whenever. If the places is rented as a whole unit she can sublet. If its rented by individual rooms with a seperate lease per room she can give 60 days notice and leave.

PS i bet most people dont realize that they are entitled by law to 6% per year interest on the deposit for first and last payable on the 12 month of every year?

usually works out to be $40 or so.

Your friend should move out. Bottom line I doubt she can legally do much unless her firend is dangerous to her physical well being.

Obviously this roommate has more issues than simple slobbiness. A beligerant attitude towards your friend trying to talk to her about it only proves immaturity.

The roommate obviously hasn't lived alone for too long and she needs to learn the hard way. She loses friends and makes her life so much more difficult by not respecting others. Hell her parents prolly kicked her out for the same reasons.
