I use my PC and Wavelab.

There's a few different hardware devices you can buy but why waste the money when you can use what you have ?

total recorder records direct to mp3 as well...just have to download the lame encoder (which is freely available) and make it point to it

didnt notice the portable device part...u can get an i-river mp3 player...it records audio too...check the HP series or pick up an older model off ebay...10gb should be aight

Long cords from mixers to PCs can easily distort the sound quality.

Many people use an iriver jeff, but be sure to look into the model before buying. I have the H10 and it doesn't record.
