Silly (or maybe not) MIDI Question

When I'm working in MIDI sequencer, say Cubase or Sonar and record knob movements from my synth (think filter cut off, etc), how do I return the filter to its initial value when I re-wind.

E.g. - say at the start of the track my filter value was 40 and some point, I start raising it till its 128. When I hit rewind it remains at 128 (starts fully open). How do I ensure it is returned back to 40 when I restart recording?

Thanks!

MIDI is all about messages that are given from one device to another. But the message given is not the currect value of an automation, but changes in that automation. So if you want your track to start an automation at a certain value you need to make sure a change message is given to your device before the song starts.

In most tracks it's best to have a pre-roll set into your sequencer. Your track should start playin at 4 or 8 bars into the sequence. So 8 bars of silence at the start. This gives you room to set all automation values to the desired starting point. In this case you need to manualy put a starting point for your cutoff automation into your sequencer with the mouse.

hope this helps,

kind regards,

CD

Music is as universal to people as breathing. We've probably been at it since before we even started talking. Immaging two cavemen smashing away at a peace of flint to make a spearhead. It wouldn't take long for them to learn te synchronise the sound. And there you have it, the words first percussive band.

Music has survived wars, famines, the plague and many other things and has evolved with man across many cultures. Dance music is just the next step in the evolutionary chain. My guess is that it will probably be with us untill we are extinced.

thanks for advise but it is somewhat... generalistic. The theory is clear but specifics are somewhat vague. I guess I have to read up on specifics as to how to accomplish it.

thanks anyway..

What sequencer are you using? And what synth?

Only problem I can see is that the controller message will reset the start value, but the knob on the hardware will still be turned to the right, and as I understand (I am no MIDI expert) when you then start playback, won't the movement of the knob cause the filter in this case to open right up again?
Wouldn't a better solution be to record the automation (or is that to come latter?)

Go into your midi part, or list editor where you have recorded the sweep.

Cubase = Midi, List Editor or Part Editor

You should see all the values for the sweep on the Virus, if I remember right, it should be "Balance LSB" or CC#40.

Your sweep should go from, say, bars 5 to 21.

You need to insert a cc change at the start to reset it to the intial filter cutoff value, in your case, 40. So set the first cc change value at the start of your loop to be the desired setting.

I would actually advise, putting in a one bar area to reset everything, as there can/will always be a slight glitch when bulk changing midi, especially when you have those notes going.

What nhibberd means, (I presume, and this is what I do) is that you have a 5 bar, 8 bar, (whatever suits) "pre" area where you configure all your hardware, and send all the patch change, paramter change settings etc.

Pre-Settings area only:
1.1.1 Patch = A001 My Lead
1.1.2 Filter Cutoff = 40
etc

Now the song actually starts:
5.1.1 to 21.1.1 Filter Cutoff sweeps from 40 to 128

Have fun.
