CPU Spikes and VST patch changes

Hi all,

I'm trying to change patches in VST synths in realtime without creating CPU lag using Ableton. All synths I have tried do not create any lag for the CPU when a program change is executed within the wrapper; However, as soon as I try to automate the program change using Ableton's built in clip-based mechanism or using my MIDI controller, there is a CPU usage spike and the song halts for a second.

This totally ruins a live set and is completely useless. The synths I'm interested in using are Vanguard and z3ta+. Albino doesn't seem to share the same problem.

Can anyone shed some insight? It just doesn't make sense why it is fine changing the program within the wrapper, but not when it is automated. I am totally frustrated!

My computer's a 2.4 GHz AMD64 with 1 gig of ram. The soundcard is an M-Audio firewire audiophile with the latest drivers.

Thanks,
ux

does it sound like its clicking from a latency issue with your sound card? or does your computer stutter when it starts playing the automation?
