Real Compression / EQ Opposed To Software Based?

Anyone ever read up on if it makes much of a difference to use real hardware compression / other mixdown equip vs the software based ones?

Is it a big improovement in overall balance / sound with the same exact settings?

You just can't simplify it like that.

There's a great deal of differences between hardware equipment. There's tube, solid state and DSP (actually software) based gear. Cheap ones cost almos nothing and the more expensive ones cost up to several thousands of dollars. Also "same" settings give different results on different gear. But if we talk about "character", then it's a matter of taste. Some sound "warmer", some "more in face", some both, etc.

It's also subjective if there's a big difference or not. Those who are hardcore gear-a-holics, usually hear great deal of differences. Those who just like to make music, couldn't care less about character of EQ's, as long as it does what it's supposed to.

With hardware compressors i often hear alot about them sounding "warmer" and such but what can you expect. A good hardware compressor can cost alot compared to dsp compressors prices not going that high.
Its basicaly that you get what you pay for.

/me drooools at Neve compressors at The Art Institute

We have some Neve compressors at my school. And they sound amazing. Much better than a Waves C1. However, that little piece of rack hardware will cost you a bundle

But like everything, it's all a matter of taste, and more importantly, HOW you use the tools you have.

I sure want a Neve though.
