[Review] Tiesto Solo @ Mansion [2006-03-26]
got to mansion at around 9:00 and there was almost no one on line, so a spot was claimed at the very front of what would soon become a confusing and ridiculously long line. club opened at 10, and we were inside by 10:15. tiesto was already on, spinning behind a nifty screen a la dutch dimension and TiC -- and for about 20 minutes he was spinning to an empty room... why mansion didn't let the crowds in a little earlier to fill the place out is beyond me...
tiesto continued spinning an outstanding prog-house set until midnight - he ended the 'opening' 2-hour set with Julian Jabre - War and the curtain went up. initially he was on-point and then he got mired in a road to nowhere: the tunes were stagnant and the crowd was forced to contend with cirqe du soleil style acrobatics and performance artists in costumes that looked like ninja turtles [i guess our 80 bucks had to go somewhere...]. The nadir of this shite middle portion came with a god-awful performance by jes brieden [in fairness to her, some of the crappy sound was the fault of the club's system].
i was getting pissed and disappointed and was ready to write off the set at this point, when tiesto suddenly came alive and for the next 2.5 hours ripped the place apart. shortly after 5 he ended with Silence, then did a 2 small encores with mark norman and traffic.
overall, the night was mixed: mansion was simply gorgeous inside but their system was balls, badly distorting high frequencies; tiesto, while dropping a memorable set with many highs, still was uneven for a large chunk of the middle. while i had a good time, this is the last time i fly down to miami solely for a tiesto gig...
also, very nice meeting neil (mattivi) - very cool guy
