stuff.txt (why I love Notepad)

How many of you use Notepad on a frequent basis?

First off, I don't write ANYTHING anymore (if I can help it). I always have a Notepad document on my desktop called "stuff.txt". Whenever I have to write something down, or save a list, I add it to this file.

Most things you write, you're either goign to have to e-mail someone

First off, I don't write ANYTHING anymore (if I can help it). I always have a Notepad document on my desktop called "stuff.txt". Whenever I have to write something down, jot down a phone number, save/create a list of some kind, I add it to this file.

Most things you write, you're either going to have to e-mail someone, post it on the internet, or add it to a Word Doc, which you will format and print as a business letter. How many post-it type notes do you have laying around that you plan to consolidate at some point?

For instance, all of my big posts in the Househeads threads were saved in Notepad, so I could easily edit them for future use.

I also just sent a request to Staples.com, and the form field I completed displaying what I was looking for, I copied and pasted into my "stuff" document, because I know I'll be using that for more similar requests.

Do you use web mail (Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc)? Has your web mail ever crashed, and you lost everything you typed? How about long forum posts? Wasted?

Notepad is very light and sugar-free, and will NEVER crash (ok, never is ambiguous), unlike Word or your web browser.

Have you ever copied something from a web page into your e-mail program, or even MS Word? All of that formatting and those table borders are pretty cool, aren't they (here's where you disagree)?

Well, Notepad is a barebones text editor - no colors, no links, no tables, no sizes or spacing. Paste your web-copied material into Notepad, and all of the formatting has been stripped, ready for use in other applications, to be formatted as YOU wish, not in a manner that you pull out your hair trying to remove.

Use your "stuff.txt" file as a to-do list, pasting today's issues in an e-mail to yourself, which you can revert to at work or school for easy access.

Notepad is found at Start > Programs > Accessories > Notepad

Here's to Notepad, the best application Microsoft has ever created.

BTW, there are other barebones text editors out there, but let's just focusing on the ease of using Notepad (which comes free with Windows) as a whole before we hate on something many people don't use enough in itself

I stoped reading there cause I'm pretty sure I know where you're getting at; and yes I am exactly the same.

I'm a heavy Notepad user.

No nonsense 'start,run,notepad' execution.

No autoformatting when you just need the text.

Also great for jotting down those tunes/sets heard on 2hp and DI that just have to be nabbed later!

(currently 2 different 'stuff.txt'-like files on my desktop )

That first post was way too long for me to read! Haha

I still use good old pen and paper...at least when it comes to notes like "what I have to do today" or things like that.

When it comes to things that I need to do on the computer or emails I need to send, I usually use MSWord and have a folder on my desktop that I save it to.

I don't really have experience using notepad...but maybe I'll try it.

I just go this new thing called Yahoo Widgets though...and one of the options I have is a thing where I can have 4 little post-it note type things on my desktop. I just got it so I haven't really used it yet. I did once, and the note I left was not saved when I turned my computer off and then back on...I think there's an option to save it though. I'd have to check it out.

There's a house-dj-good-friend-of-mine (whose name I won't mention) who needed to perform tasks such as:

1. remember his ftp username/password

2. address a matter where mp3s he would purchase and download had filenames of simply a number, so i directed him to copy the artist/title from the web page, save it in notepad, then use it to rename a file

3. use his BBcode signature that I created for hiim to use on TA, on other sites as well

He now saves all of this in his "stuff.txt" file. it's a very useful tool everyone

I would not recommend storing password information on your computer.

Ahh, yes, the hidden dangers of copy/pasting from Notepad.
