Heey.

Sorry if this has been discussed a lot before... couldn't find any specific thread though.


What are your thoughts about buying used gear? Is it a "no no" or an OK option for home use? And if you find it an OK option, any special advice on what to think about?

I'm going to buy a couple of cdjs for practising at home. I was going to buy two new cdj 200s, but now I'm starting to think about maybe getting some used cdjs (not necessarily the 200s).

That's definitely a big no for me. When it comes to electronics and audio/video products, they have to be new or else I won't even bother, especially given the amount of money you might be shelling out. Also, the issues of durability and functionality arise much more quickly with used gear due to the amount of use/abuse/maintenance (or lack thereof) from the previous owner. I really don't trust that, so I'd rather be safe than sorry and buy brand new, even if something is advertised as being in the best of conditions. That's just my personal preference as a consumer though.

However, on a side note, it does feel so much more satisfying to have bought something brand new as opposed to used. I don't know, there is just something really cool about having saved up for a piece of gear you really wanted and knowing that you can go out and buy it new.

depends on cdj's i'd only buy from someone i trusted. IE if there was a problem i could kick there ass. For TT's as long as the motor is good its all good. Mixers would really depend.

I got my techs used. The person who sold them to me got them used as well. Only a few minor kinks I had to get rid of on my own but they work great now!

I bought my mixer used, was in mint condition until USPS got their hands on it

Anyways, all the faders are replaceable anyways and I bought a new mint faceplate!

like i said something like tt's are okay and certain mixers but i wouldn't buy cdjs etc.

well for me i got my tables new. i got my cdj1000 used. when i got it, the jog dial and stuff didnt work at all i got lucky though, the guy who i bought it from had it serviced and i guess something went wrong or didnt work. i took it back to the shop he got it fixed at and got it fixed like new. as for my mixer i got it new. Main reason for getting the mixer new was for warranty and such.

I've bought my 1210 M3d's Second hand. Mainly because i wanted to get a pair of M3D's so i had to go that route.

My mixer was bought brand new, because i could afford it (it's nothing special just a Vestax PCV 275)..

Bought Serato second hand.
Headphones (HD25's) new lol

Now when it comes to 2nd hand gear though in general. I'm split. I love the idea, and have used it before. Mainly in my car, i have two amps in my car, each retails between £600-£700 I got both of them for £650 only because i went second hand.

The amps have been playing for over a year and half, flawlessly and i love them bits. And will never sell them. (for those of you who know your car audio, one of the amps is a DLS A3 (dual mono) and the other is a Genesis 4ch..)

Anyway, my point is. If you can't afford something full stop. EG, it just doesn't make sense to buy the product new. Then second hand, again IMO, is a viable option. However if it just requires a little more saving which you can afford and the final price isn't in your opinion too high. Then i'd go with brand new.

I have to agree with DJ Intrigue, saving up and buying something brand new is nice.. but you pay the price.

Best example is a car, it's sweet getting a brand spanking new car. But the pain of the first years depreciation is an UBER bitch!

Buying cdjs used should be ok. But I would be much more careful when looking for a used mixer..

Buying used worked well for me. The trick is to know what you’re buying and get to inspect it first. High end items purchased used can be a good deal most of the times. 1200's used for example are fine as long as you inspect them. It’s a safe bet that if they work when you buy them they'll be good for years after since 1200's are known for durability. There is allot of other gear that can be a good deal used if you do some research first and buy gear that is known for being solid.

dont worry dude, serato is made out of steel

Not that it would describe it's quality but I think they actually ran a jeep cherokee over it a few times and filmed it.
Then used it at a gig =)
