your speakers are probably fine, so i wouldn't jump to that first.
Things to try:
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Volume Control
double check that nothing is muted, and your volume isn't at zero.
un-install your soundcard (through windows) and re-install with new drivers from the manufacturer's website.
if that doesn't work, replace your soundcard with a new one. They are uber-cheap, and an easy install.
