That depends on the price, what else you have, and what you're after.

:-)

In general it's "Softer" than a virus or a Nord, but it is very versatile, and in general it's a lot cheaper. You can even upgrade the software and get a "Supersaw" waveform.. :-)

I liked mine, but I sold it and bought a bunch of real analog gear. That's something else all together.. :-)

Cool Staticblue!

Hey Diginerd, whats a good REAL analogue synth these days, and do you have mp3 samples? Would be nice to listen to spot any differences

Anyways, back to topic, I have a Virus C and a Nordlead 3 so far and thought a Supernova might complement it nicely.

It's the normal Supernova version, not the "2" one I'm afraid.
But I think it's a pretty solid price for it though? I can get it for $400.

Whats this upgraded software then?

It's the OS of the synth. You can download the most recent one from Novations homepage.
I have the Nova, a 16 voice/6 part little brother of Supernova.
Makes really cool noises. Especially basses, pads and fx-sounds. It's not as raw as
NordLead1, but it might be a bit rougher than NordLead3. I highly recommend it

I can post some stuff I've made with it later..

DSI Evolver is probably the best and cheapest real analog you can buy (it was anominated for the MIPA awards this year). It's only 500$ for the MonoEvolver at analoguehaven.com

Check out www.davesmithinstruments.com/evolver/sounds.html to hear some samples.

Also Alesis Andromeda is all analog, more dance/trance oriented than the Evolver (think it's called Andromeda, anyway..)

The Evolver isn't exactly trance-oriented, but few true analogs are. But IMO the sound from the Evolver is amazing, there is just something about it which I feel unconsiously that I find very nice... I guess that's the infamous "analog affect"

And about the Supernova, I have no idea, it looks like a sweet synth but I've never tried it (I've always wanted to get the Nova Desktop). Let me know how you like it if you decide to buy

Heres few sounds from Novation Nova
edit: -sounds offline-

nova1.mp3 is a short clip with Novation Nova on all synths and Novation Drumstation on drums(+ 2 or 3 samples). Rest of the clips are just plain Nova without any additional processing. The internal effects on that thing are awesome

Very much worth a buy.. if you know how to use it ofcourse.

SuperNova is definatly worth buying.

A very capable synth in the right hands.

Ever wondered why you don't see that many floating around?

Hehe, cool

I got the supernova, but I'm gonna connect it all next week as I'm getting a jp-8000 and waldorf micro q next week too, so this will be fun

I've also got a jp-8000, and to this point I haven't seen what's so terrific about it. Surely it has a supersaw-waveform, and you can do some nasty tricks with the feedback-waveform.

But to this date, software has come really far. Next to for instance korg legacy the jp is starting to fade.

The nova on the other side seems like a very good synth for pads and "softer" elements.

Sorry been out of town for a couple of days.

Re above comments:

1. Yea, upgrade to OS of your suprnove, you can get the file from their site. Latest rev addss a supersawish waveform.

2. Supernova complements the Waldorf Q range ad the JP-8080 nicely. Between those three you should be able to get most "Analog" textures.

3. Looking at my synth collection most of them are well over 10 years old, and my fave analog synth is 22 years old..

That's a Roland MKS-80, and it was released in 1984. This is the synth that the JP-8000 is trying to be. The JP may have supersaw chords, but the MKS-80 has detuned 8 voice unison VCOs, with Curtis Filter chips. In short it's beyond phat and has a presecence in a mix that is so total it becomes annoying trying to find sounds that hold a candle to it. :-)

I replaced my supernova with an MKS-50 (Rackmount Alpha Juno), MKS-70 (Rackmount JX-10), MKS-80 (See above, basically a rack JP-8 sort of), and a Korg EX-800 with filte mod.. Real analog nirvana.

Of course, tuning is unstable, they're delicate and old, but treat them well and they treat you well back.

They're not DSP engines in the slightest.
