What is the Mod Matrix?

hey mates

question for all you synth programmers out there. i really suck at programming synths so i'm trying to learn, the lamest thing though is that i can only seem to get one sound from the soft synths that i program.

anyway thats not the point of this thread, the question i have is: what is the mod matrix?? it seems to be prevelant in many synths like sytrus, z3ta and others, i was just wonderin if someone can explain it to me, it seems kinda complicated and i dont understand it. thanks for the help!

I'm not familiar with these synths but I'd say it is something to to with Modulation. Maybe someone else is best to answer here, but mod to me is short for modulation.

Im fairly sure that they are for linking certain oscilators and controlls etc.
An example would be using it to set lfo1 to controll oscilator1's pitch. Normaly the mod matrix will allow you to link the parameters and also set how the link will work.
An example of that would be having the lfo controll the filter and having a very steep slope so that it is basicaly open or closed. Hard to explain as im no expert myself but im pretty sure thats it. Just play around with it and you will figure it out.

Yeah its to activate links, like linking LFO1 to EG1, and EG1 can be set as the filter. Or Controlling Oscallators with LFOs. I mainly use them to control the filter Evenlope.

The Mod Matrix is just a table with one axis being the possible modulation sources and the other axis the possible modulation targets. So if you want to modulate a certain target (for example: filter cutoff) with a certain source (for example: midi CC 5), you just look for the row that says filter cutoff and the column that says midi cc 5, and the cell where they cross is where you put how strong the correlation between them should be (usually from -100% to +100%).
