Label Info

Anyone know how much it would cost to set up and run a label? Better yet, how much it would cost to have a DJ remix your song?

you need to be alittle more specific...

do you want to press vinyl? cd's? short runs? long runs? just sell mp3's?

do you want to have fancy labels, stickers, and custom art on the cover?

are you planning to distribute yourself? can you get a P&D instead?

how many promo's are you planning to hand out? or much do you want to spend on promotion?

what kind of dj do you want to remix your song?

your question is extremley vague... maybe it will cost a little, maybe a lot. depends on what you want to do. i would say save up atleast 5 grand to start it up. after you get your business license, a template for your logo (if you pay someone to do it) and start releasing... you can probably get away w/spending 2-3g's on every release if you press about 1k-1.5k vinyl.

i hope you have a day job or something... 'cause starting a label, is kinda of like hopping on board a sinking ship. times are tough now. it's getting more and more difficult for the little guy just to break even.

it might be a little different if you start an mp3 label... who knows... since you will probably have to spend the money you would use to press the record on promotion, so people will actually know you exist, and will look for your track online.

use p2p and piracy to your advantage. even tho there will ALWAYS be a segment of the population w/no shame who will steal your music... it's part of the cost of doing business. but a lot of pieces of shit will probably play your stuff out, and expose your music to more people. who knows, the same piece of shit may pay to see you in a local club because he discovered your music on P2P.
