Viktor Destin - Essence - May 2006 EDMM mix

Ok TA's, this set was recorded 3 weeks ago, took me awhile to put it up, but here it is. It's basicly a dark mix of sexy electric prog, a style that appeals to me greatly. I had fun recording it and i hope u guys enjoy it. Any feedback is welcome, bad/good whatever...

Just listened to your set man, you do your sound well and your mixing is good. There were some sounds that could've really got me goin mental on the dancefloor heh. Keep up, I know you'll kill it with once u get yer hands on filters

There's one constructive comment I can give you, and thats the fact that nothing really stands out. Your tracks sound similar to each other, which can either be a good or bad thing depending on opinion, but keep an ear out for variety. Mixing varieties can be difficult, but almost always more interesting and "special", its what you make out of it i guess.

Looking forward to partying at your gig on the 17th. Its definately in my choke-proof party list for good reason

All the best,
moeva.

moeva.

I try to look for different sounds out there, and my goal these days is to be flexible with different styles. But when i release a set, i want that set to sculpt a style that will make people think of me. It's hard, and some may say im not doing it correctly yet, but in my point of view, having tracks that have a similar drive, yet different in its own way, will get me to that goal. Someone please stop me if they think otherwise, I take opinions very seriously .

ps. I need a mixer with filters

Pros/Cons

Pro,

good to finally hear your set, the first and last tracks stand out for me in particular. The first is a banger that immediately grabs your attention and you know already what I think of the Religion track...

The mixing is really smooth and the track you pick are very filter-friendly it sounds so I'm sure you're gonna have fun with that.

Over all, I'd say your set is a great energy boost. It's very dancefloor orientated which is a good start to get your name out. I always believed that promoters, clubs etc. always picture a dancefloor when they listen to new demos. If they were listening to yours the dancefloor would be packed so you're definately on the right path....

There are two specific tracks that are my favorite. One starts around 31:50 and has the sound like the theme track from "Blade" and the other reminds me of Black Strobe shit but now I forget where it starts

Con,

Nothing is perfect so there are some constructive things to say here. Although your set as I say is a great boost of energy and would pump the person to go out clubbing, my personal taste is geared toward something else. If i would have to choose only one genre to label your set it would be prog. For some that are crazed fans of Sander K. and other prog masters this set would be heaven from start to finish. I personally like more variety in a set, like moeva was saying in a way.

You take the basic formula of one set = one style too much to heart. What for me makes a set really stand out is when the DJ works with one overall style/idea and still manages to incorporate different things. You can say that there are electro and trance elements in your set and you wouldnt be wrong but those elements are always backed up by a similar sounding prog beat. This makes hard for tracks to stand out and it loses points in replay value.
Also, if I were to chose where this would fit best it wouldnt be afterhours, it would be a club, something like Upperclub on a good night.

-----

Now only because it took me longer to explain the con it doesnt mean I dont like your set. Im gonna keep on listening and as I mentioned above there are at least 4 tracks that I would go nuts for if I heard them live. Keep up the good progress and now we all patiently wait for those filters

You are still looking for your sound so just try everything and see what grabs you most. I can already see that Prog is a big part of you though.

Looking forward to the 17th!!

Thanks for the constructive post Mitsu/Moeva. I particularly like the last part of the last post:

Most of the prog driving baselines that i incorporate into my sets do sound similar, and that is a weakness i must conquer. When i look for a track (on juno for example), the first thing i keep my ear open is the baseline. Im a sucker for those low, driving, electric, buzzing proggy baselines, and whenever i find a track that catches my attention, and tends to flow with the rest of the tracks i usually put it in my wishlist. But, the track must also have its other catchy parts as well. Other elements that shape my style are melodies such as the track in 12:30. For me that track is my favorite from the set. It has that twisty feel to it, and i could visualize people melting on the dancefloor like wax + heat.

I do however mix my stuff up, but usually when i play a 3+ hour set. I like to keep my style changes smooth and gradual tho, and i often plan my sets in similar fasion, and this is what im trying to work on these days. I need to be more flexible, and have more variaty in my dj bag. Like i told shawn05, im starting a minimal collection, but a collection that will of course rub of the present style i play.

PS. I need a bigger dj case

Rock on people, thanks for dedicating the time to listen to my stuff!
Well well appreciated.

Vik, you know what I think of your set. Nothing is perfect, but you did a killer job. I've listened to this one in comparison to the other two sets you've released, and this one comes out on top. When looking for tracks, choose rhythm over melody. Your tracklisting is very impressive. Very new tracks, its great.

I'd like to see what you could do with filters, but nothing that wouldnt suit your style. Keep it real bro. You're doing great, keep it up, and I'll be there on the 17th no matter what. At your side, bro.

Congrats.
