when i have the moolaa i am thinking about picking myself up a set and running everything thru it - computer, tv, and dex and ne other sound equipment I might just pick up along the way

Why dont you ask about comperable speakers to these at www.avsforum.com ?? I am sure there is something that might be better suited for you needs at your price...

i have nothing but good things about them but am open to other suggestions

gluegun - check out this store which is where i went to check the MA speakers out. they have heaps of stuff and the guys know what they are talking about. you might wanna check out the home audio and home theatre links to see what you reckon about what they recommend

Well, give it some time... you've already gotten some tips on some other speakers to check out, and they've already begun to describe some of the uses that they aren't "knock your socks off" for... you did good to reply asking some more questions; give it some time.

Woah, someone just ripped those speakers apart (metaphorically, of course)... but he has a point. A "monitor" sound is not necessarily a "fun" or engaging sound.

true.. monitors are good for hearing a nice frequency range, and crystal clear sounds, and nice low basses.. If you are interested in normal speakers for all your audio equipment, I suggest a pair of Cerwin Vega 12".. About $700 CND, but they sound amazing, and can go loud. If you got more money to spend then that, and you want something that can pop the nails out of your walls, go for some small club speakers.. I've seen some for around $2000 per pair.. also I've seen a dual 15" sub for $1000 .. depends how your gonna use the speakers, and how much money you have.

Well, CV's are *fun*, but you don't actually have a whole lot of quality. For that price, you can sacrafice some boom to get the same loudness, and better quality, and still have nice bass.

The thing with most speakers that you all are considering is, well, a good number of them aren't really up to some of the, ahhhh, accuracy standards that audiophiles and the home theater people at avsforum have. That's not to say that these people don't like bass and fun -- they do -- but, I would guess that they would be able to tell you brands that are like CV, but not near as well known, that give you better quality for the money...

Thats right, Cerwin Vega's are too expensive, that's why I didnt get them. Just got a $500 system instead, by a no name brand (merak), and these are better monitors anyways.

You do have another option:

Are you any good at woodwork? If so, you could try making your own speakers. You just buy the driver units (Eminence make excellent PA drivers) and build the cabinets yourself. There are loads of web sites that tell you how to build the cabinets, and you will save yourself an enormous amount of money by doing this. You can buy an Eminence Kilomax pro 18" 1000W RMS driver for roughly $300, probably a bit less. You would want two of these, so that's $600, and in addition you would want some mid-range and high-end drivers. You probably want something like 600W RMS 12" drivers for the mid, and 400W RMS 8" for the highs, and maybe a piezo tweeter. This will probably come to around about $1000, or perhaps slightly more, but you will end up with at least 2KW per side. Now ll you need is some massive amps to power it!

If this is all slightly too much then you can obviously scale it all down, but the point is you can make an incredible system with far better components than in commercial speaker systems, for a fraction of the price. All you need is a large sheet of three quarter inch ply, a saw and a bit of woodwork skill!

Well! Check out Mal P's response in your thread on AVSForum... he seems to be speaking pretty strongly... why don't you have a look at what he says, as well as the NHT speakers?
