well the good people at monash sent me this today...

********************************************************************
A message from Professor Stephen Parker, Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor
********************************************************************

Monash staff and students will no doubt be aware of media reports about
brain tumours that have occurred amongst staff at RMIT's city campus.

According to those reports seven people have been diagnosed with brain
tumours over the past seven years. These people have reportedly all
worked on the top floors of a single building at RMIT. RMIT have
indicated that they are looking at possible causes, but at this stage no
causative agent has been identified. They have engaged a team of experts
to examine the issue. A copy of their media release is at
http://www.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=6a5wbfi9ot2e

Other media reports have speculated that the tumours may be due to
telecommunications antennae on the roof of the building.

I am sending this message to all staff and students because Monash
University
also has a number of buildings with telecommunications antennae on the
roofs.
These are used for receiving and transmitting mobile phone
communications, emergency services information and taxi company
communications. The radiation levels emitted from these towers have been
tested, and the levels meet required safety standards.

By way of background, as a proactive measure in 2002 Monash initiated
surveys of radiation levels for all buildings with telecommunications
equipment and these are regularly updated. All the survey results were
significantly below the Australian Radiation and Protection and Nuclear
Science Agency (ARPANSA) standards for a member of the public. ARPANSA
standards are based on the recommendations of the International
Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and the World
Health Organisation.

In summary, radiation levels due to telecommunications towers at Monash
comply with current standards set by ARPANSA and ICNIRP. These standards
have been set below levels where health effects have been detected to
ensure an added margin for safety.

dunno how that helps you RMIT folk but puts my mind at ease...

i go to rmit and i study in that building, luckily nowhere near the 16th & 17th floors in which they have now closed off.

RMIT sent me an email outlining the situation:

====================================================
Dear student

RMIT University values the health and safety of our students and staff
very highly.

We are undertaking a health and safety investigation at one of our
buildings in the city. Health and safety specialists are conducting
radiofrequency monitoring and air and water quality tests at RMIT's
Business building (Building 108, 239 Bourke Street) to establish if
there is any connection with illnesses experienced by a number of staff
who have worked in the building from 1999. All but one of the staff
have worked there for 10 years and one for four years. Seven staff
members have been diagnosed with various kinds of brain tumours, five of
them benign. Five of the seven affected staff were located on Floor
17.

We have decided to temporarily move staff from floors 16 and 17. These
levels normally house staff offices rather than teaching spaces. Staff
have been given the choice of working from home or elsewhere in the
university.

RMIT is investigating every aspect of the building and environmental
factors in the nearby area. So far there is no evidence to suggest any
link with the health issues. Initial environmental testing into
radiofrequency and air quality was completed in December 2001 following
the reporting of the first two cases. All results were well below the
accepted levels.

Students using the building will continue to be kept fully informed as
to the progress of the investigation.

RMIT is spread across the whole city, that building is mainly just for Business students.

I rekon its the phone tower for sure........what else could it possibly be. Just remember people dont talk on your mobiles for too too long & dont stay close to microwaves while they are heating things up & wait 20 sec till you open it.

lol

Yeah i have always wondered how dangerous microwaves would be over long periods of use... might not be dangerous at all but you never really know.

About mobile phones, remember that farmer who had a tumour in his chest right next to where his phone sat in his chest pocket every day? After that i kept my phone out of my pants as much as possible lol.
