I know what you mean about rockers playing UO. Why is that? I think it must be the synergy of the D&D scene from the early 80's culminated with the metal scene that errupted around the same time. Both D&D and metal were things for "outsiders", so maybe that's where the combination came from.

I used to play UO a good bit, right around the time that the Europa server was introduced. That server was so nice. While my ping was usually sub-par, it wasn't over-crowded like the other servers. I played EQ avidly for a while as well, but stopped when I realized it was causing chronic pains in my body and wasting my life! At any rate, how is the 3D client in UO? I haven't heard much about it, but am curious what it's all about. I also just cancelled my subscription to DAoC, which was quite good. However, I didn't want to put too much time into it as I have heard that Shadowbane is going to be the most encompassing persistent online world (at least until soemthing new comes along ) and have given thoughts to checking that out. There's supposed to be an in-depth government (guvernment to all you Toronto peeps) system at it's heart that differentiates it from other online games. Ok, ok, I'll stop rambling now....

I haven't heard of any UO players on this forum either. I guess most 'addicts aren't into fantasy. I sure am though, Photo_bot_2k1.

Interesting.....

Wow, only paid once? I guess I was just one of many sots who paid monthly to play UO... So, if you guys could give a little more detail, you could just host your own UO server? Were there tons availble? Was there any type democracy to keep things from running "amok" or were things pretty much amok?

One of the coolest things about UO, IMO, was that there seemed to be a very genuine feeling of good versus evil, which was a major draw for me. These newer online games are so concerned with eliminating PKing from the structure of the game. They should be thinking of more creative ways to implement it and balance it out than doing away with it. I think they've (DaOC, EQ, etc) taken away a major element of the MMORPG by not allowing PKing to go on.

ya running ur own server is tough...because number 1 countless hours of scripting new items and new features so ur server doesnt get boring...#2 u need a fast connection if u want to compete against some of the great servers out there....usually a mediocre server will have around 30 ppl on at all times...the good servers like the alter realm and Novus and athlore would have 100-300 ppl on at all times...fun as hell....especially when ur the biggest name on the server hehe....makes u a bit arrogant lol...but running ur own server is hard...#3 u have to have a good staff....u hve to be able to trust ur staff and at the same time u have to be watching the loggs alot to see if ur staff is being corruptive....and u always got to be an undercover cop because someone is always scamming....but the end result is fun

Anarchy Online Anybody?

As much as I love fantasy, this game seems pretty interesting in that it's an MMORPG based on technology. You can download the client and play for 7 day for free from http://www.anarchyonline.com. Of course, it's 650 meg, so a cable modem MIGHT be a good idea.

it is not that easy to start an own shard. in germany there are lots of freeshards, but most of them have not even a concept! after a short time playing there it became boring and people were looking for a new shard, or created a new shard on their own. so, as i said, there are lots of freeshards, so much, that they are "stealing" players from each other, because it is not really funny to be alone on the server.

when you want to get a new, an own shard started, you need a concept, a staff, a host, lots of time. and that are enough problems, the biggest is the time.

(hope everybody understands my english)
