Re: Fuk The Da Vinci Code!

I hope it's true ... too much hype for this film.
It’s one of the most heavily hyped movies in years.
It’s one of the biggest selling books in decades.
It’s a controversial tome that’s caused an uproar among some Christians.
And if you believe the critics, it’s a total disaster.
The long awaited $125 million flick “The Da Vinci Code” was finally screened for critics just prior to its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this week.
And it’s clear when it comes to this movie, they’re non-believers.
Scribe after scribe called the flick a bomb, with words such as "dud", "unwieldy" and "plodding" just a few of the nicer epithets tossed out.
The plot centres on a theory that Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene actually had a child together and that the Catholic Church resorted to murder to cover up the truth.
The movie stars Tom Hanks and was directed by Ron Howard. Both are normally considered a sure thing at the box office and each has an impeccable track record.
But if you pay attention to what reviewers had to say after emerging from a darkened theatre, that streak is over.
Critics were actually heard laughing when the film arrived at key plot points. But you could hear a pin drop when the final credits rolled.
"'Da Vinci' never rises to the level of a guilty pleasure. Too much guilt. Not enough pleasure," assesses Kirk Honeycutt of the Hollywood Reporter, who calls Hanks’ performance “wooden”.
Some were upset by what seems like endless amounts of screen time spent debating religious and historical facts – great for a classroom, but not a big screen blockbuster.
"I haven't read the book, but I just thought there was a ridiculous amount of exposition," argues Lee Marshall of Screen International. "I thought it was plodding and there was a complete lack of chemistry between [co-stars] Audrey Tautou and Tom Hanks."
“I thought the movie was a big dud,” concludes the Boston Herald’s Stephen Shaefer. “Eagerly anticipated, highly controversial. You'd never know it from watching this movie. Nothing works really. It's not suspenseful. It's not romantic. It's certainly not fun.”
The overall prediction: the movie will be a huge draw at first for some of the 40 million people who’ve read author Dan Brown’s book.
But they expect the numbers to fall off quickly once friends tell friends and word of mouth spreads about an explosive topic that simply failed to light a dramatic fuse.
But the stars of the show beg to differ, asking you to reserve judgment.
“My advice is, since virtually no one has really seen the movie yet, is to not go see the movie if you think you're going to be upset,” warns Howard.
Who’s right? You can find out for yourself when the film hits Toronto theatres on Friday.
