There are some people who argue that the amount of fossil fuel on earth is circumstantial evidence of God's existence because it is so useful to us.

Circumstanstial evidence alone won't convince rational minds of anything but it can be of use.
For simplicities sake I'll assign a weight of 100.0 on an as yet unamed Scale to the circumstantial evidence above to establish a baseline.

Conversely athetism is predicated on the interpretation of the evidence of reality that says the universe doesn't give us any special attention. Fair enough.

Using the unamed Scale above, assign a weight to the following Five things.
1. Combustion
2. Alloys
3. Radio
4. Plastic
5. Electricity

Before assigning a value bear in mind questions like:

Why does radio exist? Because the universe supports it. If radio didn't exist how big of a *hit* would civilisation take?

Why is steel stronger than copper? Because the universe supports it. If the strongest metal on earth was copper how big of a *hit* would civilisation take?

It might be easier if you simply flip the question and ask "What does a Sentient Race want from a Universe?"

And a reasonable simplified answer is "Fuel for civilisation". Look around you... we live in a universe that is supersaturated with high octane civilisation fuel!

Or forget all the above and ask Goldilocks does water freeze at the perfect temperature?

Or if plastic didn't exist what would we use? Something else... because the universe always provides.

The history of the conscious life is akin to the story of an amnesiac waking up in a Hotel. Are you at the part where the amnesiac realizes it isn't a HOtel but a 'Sentient Species Incubator'.
