Smoking ..umm..something FINAL SCRATCH questions

hello everyone... i was wondering if anyone knew anything about FINAL SCRATCH by stanton. it gives you the ability to play mp3s from your computer through a specially made vinyl record that streams mp3s from the computer and allows you to play the mp3s through your turntables. the package gives you two time coded vinyls for streaming the mp3s from your computer and also a program. i was just wondering if anyone has heard anything about it.. if its good or a waste of time and money. i just found this package intresting because i have a lot of mp3s.

Haven't heard that much about it. I did hear that Richie Hawtin (aka Plastikman) is using them, that they're not in the shop yet and that they're incredibly expensive(and I do mean incredibly).

Is it available now???

I would definitely get it if I had the money. It has been tested and improved over a long period of time by some very good DJs (Richie Hawtin and John Aquaviva).
It's not only excellent because you can play stuff you don't have on vinyl, but it is excellent because you can have a HUGE record-collection with you. Ever tried bringing 3000 vinyls to your gig?
You never have to worry about your vinyls being stolen or lost on the plane or damaged or whatever.
And the latency is below 10ms I believe, so everything you do with the "vinyl" happens in real time!
Now THAT would have been a x-mas present to make me happy!

It might not sound a lot, but 10ms is a lot when you're talking about DJing. 10ms is 1/100 of a second. Imaging you're beats are off by that much - OK it doesn't sound like a lot of time, but I'm sure you could definitely tell. There's just no way that this will ever replace vinyl if you have to deal with this kind of latency. With real vinyl there is of course no latency (apart from the speed of light - the signal has to get through the RCA cables and the mixer).

Umph that's a big frog to swallow...
I haven't understood exactly how this Digital Vinyl works but it sounds worth it (Considering it will develope faster than the vinyl technology will --- Keep this in mind!).

P.S. Isn't it the speed of sound?
(Which means not 300,000 KM p/s or 18,000,000 p/h, "Only" 1200 p/h...)
Doesn't matter that much anyways, even sound speed means a delay of about 0.0000000000001 sec or some thing

Anyways, any DJ with a bit experience could master overcomming the 10 MS delay for sure IMO. (I think even I could do it, and I am NOT an experienced DJ)

hehe...it's not the speed of sound, because we are talking about the sound in the wire and not in the air.

BTW, I said "BELOW 10 ms" which means the latency is not 10 ms, but LESS. I wrote "below" because I couldn't remember if it was 8 or 7 ms. AND, that does NOT have ANYTHING to do with the beat being off. The sound coming out of the speakers is the same, and the sound in your headphones, too. The only part where this is relevant is when you push or slow down the vinyl or do a backspin or whatever. Then THIS will happen 0.007 seconds after you touched the vinyl. And that is not "a lot" of time....try stopping it on a stop-watch.

Yes but it a difference of even 0.05 secs. will not sound very good if you put 2 tracks out loud... Especially if 1 they're both now compltely off-low.

@ I've said, it wouldn't be that hard to master how to offset that.

sorry, you didn't understand me. There IS NO offset in the music. The only thing that is delayed is the manipulation you do with the vinyl. So you have your tracks matched and are in a transition...and you notice that one track is slightly slower and starts to go offbeat. You then touch the "vinyl" a little to bring the tracks back together. Now the effect of your touch will happen 7/1000th of a second after you did that. NOBODY can hear that.

It costs a little under 400 US $? I saw in the web it costs more like a little under 3000US$~! But well .. maybe that's the cost of what it would be when it really gets released.. Anyway, wouldn't this mean we wouldn't be able to read the grooves of the record again? That's be a little harder to mix with now wouldn't it? I was told the price of 3000US$ also includes the laptop to go with it? which will run under linux because there would be less chance of the computer getting crashed.. ?
