To face the DJ or not

I was lurking as usual and someone posted about how they disapprove of people not facing the DJ. I'm not one to say fuk that, but it got me thinking that one of the reasons i got into clubbing was that it felt to me like the anti-concert. I'm been to quite a few concerts from the large-meadow lands, camden blokbuster thing to smaller venues like electric factory, trocadero, TLA etc...but i was always turned off by the idolization and performer being higher and mightier than the fans. Not to mention not being able to dance, plastered next to some sweaty manimal. I am totally down with not facing the DJ. I particular loved it when i saw people sitting or walking down a hall and just started tearing shit up b/c the speakerz just exploded. Maybe i'm in the minority, but I for one wish that people would not stand in front of the booth and stare or cram so close as to only be able to headnod. Granted some clubs are just REDIC crowded and i MOS DEF approve of those who watch DJs to examine technique, but to say shit about not facing the DJ, well to each his own. Any opinions?

annnnnnnnd i'm back. so, i would like to say that it's about the MUSIC, not the dj. i definitely had my share of time where i faced the dj (well, haha i was in love with pvd at the time ) but i think facing the dj ie, the elevation of just dj to superstar dj has led to the demise of the dance music scene-- it took away all its focus from the crowd to the dj. there's no more originality in the way people dress, there's no vibe many times, the attitude sucks in most places and it has just become some sort of nihilistic mass listening to an alternative god. it can be seen as hypocritical that yes, a lot of us go see DJs that we like but this is only because we know they play music that we like.

I like to dance and walk around but I also like to look at the DJ to see his expressions as he plays the songs. Most times I like to see them smile when they are about to play a really great track. I often take pictures and I think its nice to catch those moments IMO.

If you suffer from having to worshiping a DJ as a god, you can always try running up a massive bar tab at the club. Sure it'll will cost you plenty, but the benefits outweigh the cost of your drinks.

Scenario #1. You'll get nice and wasted enough that you'll have thoughts like "Wait! My friends were around here a second ago! Where da fuck did they go?" and "Shit! I need to get to the bathroom NOW!" that will distract you from DJ worshipping.

Scenario #2. If you're not worrying about trivial thoughts, you'll do stupid shit like stumble into people, throw up on the dance floor, hump random people and so forth. However, you certainly won't stoop down to DJ Worshipping

Scenario #3. Maybe drinking heavily at the club will kick an even bigger habit: Worrying about whether or not you will worship Diggers when you go out. You'll get so wasted that you won't remember or really care about if you paid homage to Sander last night. You'll be a bit more worried about things like on how you got home last nght. Even weeks down the line you certainly won't worry about if you really did fixate your eyes and body position in the direction of Armin Van Buuren since you're more worried about how you maxed out your AMEX blue card because you ran up a $400 bar tab at Crobar.

You go out too much. That is your problem amongst many others. When people go out to a club once and a while they just go to dance and have a great time. Daniela... stay in for a bit then go out to a club... you simply wont give a shit what is going on around you. You will just be there for yourself. And come back to TA and say "WOW Armin just rocked that shit at Spirit this weekend!"

No, the problem is people who don't go out that often, therefore have no standards because they've got little to compare to.

Hehe, well we will just butt heads here. Put it this way though and seriously think about it...

I live in Philly, so when I make an NYC trip, I make the best of it. So think about when I see a dj like Armin or Digweed. WOW!

Yeah it's pretty retarted when you have a whole club filled with crack heads and they are all staring at the DJ like he's God. Just do your thing and dance.....if anything you should be looking at the people around you with smiles.

What about those that have a history of going out, they've been to many many parties before and also choose not to go out. They've had sufficient to compare to and they've stayed in enough to not say "wow armin rocked it"

Granted I really don't think the crowd should all pray to the DJ, he's there to entertain, but the people around you are the ones who are sharing the times with you. Yea the DJ might be conducting the music, ultimately it's the music that reaches you and brought you all together, not the DJ.

Oh and a big ups to seth what's good kid!
How's the heat down in middle america? I might just have to come down there and find out what the big fuss is about. Say hello to the wifey =)

oh and to what i said up there ^^^ - you can put that "old school elitest mentality of clubbing for many years" comment away, if you feel that way - give yourself the same amount of experience and you'll understand what i mean
