Yeah, I just read that book, it's most interesting. Sort of a 'must-read' for anyone interested in the global politics of the current day (quite a powerful statement, but whether or not you agree with Freidman, none can deny that he's got some important things to say). Humerously enough, I was assigned a chapter in the book by my Political Science professor last Fall (terrible teacher hehe). I completely blew it off and didn't even bother to buy the book --- now that I got it as a gift from a freind, though, I decided to read it, something that was quite worthwhile.

I also recommend this book, much better than the popular garbage that many 'popular' political scientists write today.

An interesting fact about Freidman. The college at which my parents work was looking for a Graduation speaker --- my Dad and the Dean enquired as to Freidman and discovered that the man wanted $60,000 for one speech/lecture! He was, of course, not contracted, but if he can afford to ask for such a high fee, I'd say the fellow was successful.

Who did they get and what was the cost, because I'm not really that surprised by the cost? Also, what was the size of the graduating class?

I agree with your point about even if you don't agree with him, he's got important things to say, though. I definitely don't subscribe to everything I've read from him, but it is good material for debate. Haven't read this book, though.

Ah, GhB, we're talking about a small upstate New York private college (Cazenovia College for those interested) that had a graduating class of between two to three hundred students, so way out of their pricerange. Granted, the school has a disporportionate amount of money due to extremely wealthy donors, but 60k is still a bit steep.

What I was driving at was that for the writer of a popular political science book, even of a NYTimes bestseller, 60k is quite steep. It's a sum more appropriate for a poplular novelist, or perhaps a political figure.

Actually, I know someone who went there. Her brother used to play on my brother's soccer games in western PA.

It's not that he's just a popular political science book author, he's also one of the most influential columnists in the country.

Lastly, and I know I'm beating a dead horse, but what does it say about us when we think entertainers should make more money than those who are helping to create discussion on which our political policies are based. I'm sure Dan Brown is probably more expensive than this, and what has he actually contributed to society but a means to escape reality rather than shaping it.

been reading various columns of his here and there since college and i bought this book a while ago-- really wanna get into it but just don't have the time atm. hmm.. i'll take it on the plane with me if i finish this haruki murakami book in the next 2 weeks! reading something informative that provokes critical thought is also a + for me.

BTW, Friedman was on American Morning (CNN) this morning discussing al-Zarqawi's death and it's influence. I wouldn't be surprised if they'll be repeating it or showing it on the website.

Oh, and I forgot to add yesterday that Friedman is a Pulitzer winner, which obviously adds to his fees.
