What makes a good set?

Ya know, you often sit and wonder... what REALLY makes a good dj set? I have to say, the mood. Cuz right now Im in a fantastic mood and Markus Schulz is just killin' it.

a good set insists of nothing you listen to

flow, progression and songs that hook the listener/dancer

a story with music

its not what is dropped but when its dropped

setting for one... a good set to listen to on the radio, a good set to party to at a club, at a lounge, in your car, etc...?

let's assume it's at a club... i *think* a good set is predicated upon the flow and track selection a dj can provide... mixing skills are important, but not THE most important aspect in my mind... it's about the songs that are being played, & the order that they are played in...

i like a A Dj to build his set up bit by bit warm up abit dont give to much away to fast slowy progress it and get into it ' there late on get more progressive & Start to bang some the top tunes out & end on a high

i agree with all-nite-freak's comment also he got a point also its not what is dropped but when its dropped.

IMO; track selection mostly (not just individual tracks, but which tracks a grouped together and which ones are contrasted), then flow and progression, and least important is mixing.

in a good set nothing is less important. flow, progression, flawless mixing, tracklist/arrangement, creativity and technique are all equal details that i look for in a set to be considered good.

personally I cannot stand deejays that play the same tracks as the rest of the world. The great thing about Anthony Pappa, was that he played those hard to find and weird whites and they just flowed.

Tracks I haven't heard 10,000 times.

Which is near impossible to find lately.

if we're talking about a recorded set for listening to at home, then a lot depends on the quality of the recording and atmoshphere/vibe that it gives.
For instance: PvD - Energy 2003, the tracks are good but its the way its recorded that gives it that something special. Why can't more livesets have better recordings?
They used to sound much better, eg: Paul Oakenfold - Creamfields 99 sounds amazing!!

So you think you have heard almost every track in the world 10,000 times?
