you can search with the jog wheel...

as for using the platter in vinyl mode...a little...i only turn on vinyl mode to fine adjust location of my cue point

Mostly I use CDJ mode since I'm learning the basics but lately I've been practicing with vinyl mode a little more. Someday I wanna try scratching too.

Yes, it takes some getting used to, but I feel more comfortable and I have total control of the song just like vinyl.

I switch between CDJ and vinyl mode all of the time...

I usually find the first beat in CDJ mode, simply because you can get it more accurately by stepping through frames to fine tune. And remember when you're paused in CDJ mode, turning the platter quite quickly isn't too dissimilar from doing it in vinyl mode - you can skip through a bit and still hear what's going on, but sometimes it's easier to switch to vinyl mode, find the beat then back to CDJ mode to fine tune.

If I'm going to do a drop mix of some kind (be it a sample/loop I'm adding or occasionally the next track) it's essential that the cue point is set as accurate as possible, in which case I need the accuracy of CDJ mode for that. I could just rely on me pushing the platter off bang on time, but I find it easier hitting a button on the beat than making the perfect movement with the platter every time.

When playing normally, I tend to keep it in vinyl mode and use the ring to pitchbend... in fact I've got so used to doing it like that, that when it's in CDJ mode I still only use the ring to pitch bend. For me I find it gives me more control than using the platter.

ive only had mine a few days and read the manual but it doesnt really give you much input only the basic knowledge, because im so used to vinyl id prefer to use it this way but was unsure how you all used it. looks like you cue the first beat then switch to vinyl mode.

one other thing do you cue right on the first beat or just before it?

some of my mixes have been bang on and some slightly off. its annoying as i feel im going back to basics.

The way ive been doing it for years on denon twins (and still do as i still encounter them), is to wind it back to one possibly two frames before the beat.

Tends to be just before it but depends on the sound... essentially I make sure that it's in a position so if I hit play bang on the beat, it starts in time. That usually means setting the cue point one frame before the first beat, sometimes it works better to be a frame or maybe 2 into the beat - just have to test it.

And if I'm short of time (i.e. trying to be too clever for my own good) I just use whatever cue point I've got when I need to drop it in and wing it from there
