My guess is that Armin is fast forwarding/rewinding the cd and preparing the track so that it drops at the right time (cueing it, for short):

"cue" is basically a start point for a track thats about to be mixed. while one track is mixing you pop in the second one and usually skip forward until the first beat drops and press cue, you then wait until you feel its safe to mix out of the first track and press que again to return to that spot (where the beat dropped in the second tracl) in order to mix into it.

I guess he's doing that (ie tapping) to get a more precise cue-point.

Kindof what turntablist do, ie dragging the vinyl back and forth in rythm, to get a 'feel' for the tune.

Say you want a cue-point on the 32'th bar of a tune.

8 bars ahead, you start tapping the cue-button. You tap it 8 times, so the cue ends up at the 32'th bar. geddid?

Bah, you guys are thinking too much. When you tap the cue button on a cdj, it goes into "stutter" mode so you hear the cued track play (from the cue point) as long as you hold down the button. Let go and it returns to the cue point.

What armin was doing was just tapping the cue button, then he hit play at the start of the phrase to let the cue'd track play. It's totally unneccessary, but it's fun and you usually get the release a bit more accurate that way. I do it all the time.

what he said! i think pretty muchany one that uses cdj mode does it?

Vinyl mode all the way

It's just a habit while using the CDJ's in CD Mode so you can cue. I've seen DJ's like M.I.K.E. get hard into the music and start tapping the cue button like 8-10x like crazy.

Moving the jog wheel around is like speeding up or slowing down the CD a bit and when he moves over to the right he's moving the pitch control up and down just like a regular vinyl would.

like backcueing the first beat just before you drop it with vinyl

i do it all the time, especially when i'm really into the set i'm playing

it's useless but helps the dj get a feel for when to drop it
