hello, this may seem a little absurd, but...
how much overlap (reguarding saw sounds)
is there between the Virus TI and the Roland SH201?
or would I still need the SH201 after getting the Virus TI?

Bear in mind I won't own either of these for a good long while, right now I'm getting by w/software.

Or for that matter, is it better in terms of what the uninformed listener hears to just go for computer software as opposed to an Analog modelling synth?

In my opinion, if you have a Virus TI and don't own a JP-80x0 or the new SH-201... you're not gonna be missing out on anything. For the most part, the TI can do everything the JP/201 can. There's a lot of people like me who have a JP-80x0 and won't be able to tear away from it even if they acquire the TI.

The only recommendation I have for choosing software over hardware is the ease of use. Generally speaking, using plug-ins (softsynths, primarily) are just easier to use than their hardware counterparts. And with demo installs available, there's a nice try before you buy option instead of dishing out $1000 for a piece of kit you might not like.

Since they can both be controlled trough software this isn't a valid point.

If I have a TI would I still miss the Roland "supersaw?"
or sonically speaking, is analog modelling still a better choice than software?

I'd say this bro... - just keep on producing, don't bother yourself with these kind of questions now cause you said it your self, your not going to buy one soon.

From my point of view though -
I got a JP like 3 weeks ago. it's true that it's easier to control software (never tried the TI so I dunno how the Total Integration works). It might be only me though but I can't shake the feeling of touching the metal itself. there's a lot of difference yet a lot of similerity (if I spelled it right) between soft and hard.
In terms of SuperSaw sound, if I'm not mistaken you can produce it with the Virus TI also, maybe it won't be as fast as the JP (basicly fiddling with 2 knobs and a button) but it can be done I believe. what I suggest is that you go play with them before you buy any (when that happends) or listen to some sound demos/tell the seller to show you the capabilites of that synth.
About the SH-201, never heard of it, maybe you can tell me a bit about it and the relation it got to the SuperSaw?

I've read the filter is not the same, and doesn't sound as good.

True. But to be honest, I wouldn't recommend using the usb/vst feature of the TI to anyone. If you have it and it works for you, consider yourself lucky. I have a Virus B at home and when I was using a TI at my buddy's place, the VSTcontrol drove me up the wall. I've also heard from numerous other people that it's one of the worst pieces of software.

The Total Integration idea is great and all, but it's just a new step in tech. it's basicly a bit like SX3, it had some great new features with lots to offer, but with all the new stuff it was defently packed up with large ammount of bugs. large schools all over my country gave it bad reviews cause of the high cpu usage and never ending software bugs.
Anyhow, what I'm trying to say is that it's great, but just give it time. at first it was one of the worst things, but they are working lots on of software updates as far as I know. so just give it some time and you'll see how smooth it will run. and when it does, it will defently be a great tool.

I totally agree with you. It's one of the most genius ideas ever, and I'm sure that in due time it will be what it was meant to be. It's better to just ignore the whole VST software aspect of the TI and just love it for the synth that it actually is.
