I think it depends on the VST you use it with sometimes.
Some VSTi's come with the dials being pre-assigned to a midi CC number. You will then need to program the dials on your midi controller to transmit the correct CC.
Some instruments, such as ABL, allow you to alter the midi CC number on the instrument so that the dials and sliders control them.

he is quite right, vst's such as the vanguard synth have with pre-assigned midi CC's to their controls so you will have to set your controller accordingly. if you dont know how to do this check out tutorials on using the Generic Remote function of cubase...its very powerful

Somethin like this works for me:-
Devices - device setup
click on remote devices - click the plus at the top left and select Generic Remote
Now u get a screen split in 2 - top half for the midi signal numbers - bottom half for what they control
Take fader 1 as an example - ive mine set to control the Gain on the 1st eq in your channel edit window
To do this:
In the top window u should see Fader 1 on the left.
midi status = controller
Channel = 1 (or whatever u want, just click to change)
Now u need to set the address:
In the top window make sure u have clicked on the line for fader 1
Move whatever knob or slider on your midi keyboard u want to assign
Click on Learn button on the right hand side - u should see the address change to the address read from your keyboard.
Bottom window:
Fader 1
Device - ive mine set to VST mixer, u can click on it to set somewhere else
Channel/Category = Selected (so whatever channel i click on in the mixer, it will adjust that particular channels EQ
Value/Action = EQ Gain1 (click under the value action column and browse through to whatever parameter u want)
Click Apply
Click Export to save your new keyboard setup to a file.
