I noticed a lot of people say that when they got a pair of studio monitors it altered the way they made music.
Did your music sound good through your monitors or did it sound awful?
And what did you do to make it sound better? I've had my Monitors a few weeks, but havent been able to use them.
I wanted some tips and advice from people on how to use them and how you mannaged to get your sound soundign a lot better than it did when you first started.

Here is a tip for you. When you have your studio Monitors try to have the tweeters of the monitors at ear level or was that the mid rang. Well something like that. Well i guess thats not a tip after all. If anyone has any idea what im talking about...please feel free to correct me. Im not all here yet this morning. LOL

A great tip I've got for monitors is try listening lol.

The best way to use your monitors is listen to a few other tracks in the style you want to make and feel the frequencies coming out, i often put my hand gently on the sub to feel how strong the bass is.

Make sure they're positioned at head hight. Like a triangle with an even distance.

I have the alesis mk11's active and they're a bit bass heavy so I work my track accordingly

A few people have said when they played back their music on their new monitors it didant sound as good as they thought it would.
It was the same when they burned a CD and played it in the car. How do you get your music sounding better on monitors?
Do you boost freqencies so that the music soudns clear on your monitors and then when you master it, it should sound a lot better when burned to a CD.

I havent been able to use my monitors as i've decorating the house and they where packed away for a few weeks.
The monitors have the power switch on the front and i have read the manual.
I just wanted some advcie and a few tips on getting a better sound from my music.
When i played my music through my new monitors the synths where distorting like mad and it sounded bloody awful.

the whole point of studio monitors is to not sound good. To show all the flaws in a mix. You don't buy speakers because they sound good. You buy them because they are true.

If you want music to sound better , mix better. Don't go buying speakers so it sounds good.

True.

That was why NS-10s were industry standards a number of years ago. They make everything sound like total shit and were staples in studios because it was a common belief that these speakers represented what the average joe would have on the shelf at home.

If your mix sounds good on studio monitors though, it will typically sound good on lesser systems. At the very least you wont be overwhelming frequency ranges and making super bass heavy tracks or working on hihats with ear destroying treble.

So the monitors just let you know if something dosent sound right and enables you to alter it or just leave it out.
I sappose thats why when i didant have my monitors people said my kicks where too weak or my music was just distorting all the time.
I noticed on the monitors some of my synths sounded bloody awful in my tunes, but sounded ok on my cheap speakers.
So by getting my music to sound good on my monitors it should sound good on normal pc speakers.
If it dosent i will just have to re alter it till it does, i sappose thats what they mean by learning your monitors.

The other thing is i hear a lot of people say that when they make bass heavy beats on their monitors it sounds ok, but on other systems it soudns too heavy.
How would you ajust it so that the bass wasant too heavy?

I need some monitors myself, but my son's room is right next to my computer room. I opted for some nice professional Sennheiser headphones, but I was told a while back that monitors would still be better.

That was just an interjection and added no value at all to the post

Thanks for all the help :-) It just means i will have to work harder to get my music to sound better.
Once it sounds good on my monitors hopefully it should sound good else where.
Making music is easy. Its all the other things thats hard like monitors mastering equipment set up etc.
