for decent sound (as in not being ashamed plus much better than your current speakers at an avg price) just go for average monitors...you can find threads about basic monitors that do the job u should be looking in the 200-400 price range, me thinks.

try to get something like a 7band equalizer too. many amps have EQs on them, many dont. but sometimes, the monitors are 'colored' in sound, and have either too much bass or mid, making it sound like ass.

The live sound speakers are made by Martin Audio but they are expensive.
Some jlbs or mackies will probably do ..
Be sure to add the BBE 882 SONIC MAXIMIZER.
They cost about 200$ and will make any speaker sound like 20 times better

I have used the mackie srm450 and all models of the jbl eon speaker line (10 inch and 15 inch woofer size). The mackies, in my opinion, sound better than the jbls when you do not have an equalizer and with much more low end too. The only problem with the mackies is that they sound absolutely awful when you are within 8 ft of the speakers. Therefore, for house parties, since people sit closer to the speakers, I would recommend jbls. Get one of the 15 inch eon models and you will be fine. The retail should be reasonable and since you only need one speaker its makes for a rather inexpensive, for a speaker, setup. BTW for house parties one speaker was more than enough.

You cant get any stereo image with one speaker.
Summing everything to mono to save money is def. not the way to go.
Get a pair. Plus you will want one next to you to mix.

i wouldnt go the monitor route. they just wont project the sound if a party gets to the point where its getting busy enough for it to be good. you need some cheap (but not too cheap) pa speakers. 12" or 15" bass drivers and a 1 " compression driver in them and about 200-300 watts rms (spend about £200 per cabinet so £400 for two). then literally run them off a near good enough midi hifi system. like a sony or technics hifi system. just until you can buy a second hand pa amplifier (peavey, qsc, studiomaster). id recommend sourcing some second hand yamaha/carlsbro/peavey pa speakers myself. they are very cheap on ebay at the moment.

Just get yourself a powered JBL Eon. They go for about $250-$300 Used and $400 New. Make sure you get the POWERED Version. That means, you don't need an amp. You can hook them up directly to your DJ Mixer eliminating the need for Amps & EQ's because it has them built in. One of these, is powerful enough for a house party. Trust me, I use them all the time. They're LOUD!!! Also, the best thing about it is that the speaker can be Pole Mounted. On other words, you can put it on a speaker stand that you can get for like $30-$50 making this speaker ultra portable.

Two of these JBL Eons, two speaker stands, a DJ Stand, my Coffin with CDJs & Mixer, plus my record bag all fit in my car! And I have a small car, a freakin HONDA CIVIC!!! Talk about an ultra portable system.

i agree

mackies sound good but they're prone to overheating

jbls are powerful enough that you only need one, and they're proven workhorses in my books

ours takes a beating, it's only been in for service once in the past 3 years and it's been through uncountable shows
