Review: Sydney Blu's bday bash @ footwork nov. 24
I was so not planning on a busy Friday night out, and I've been feeling junky all week, so I *should* have stayed in, but Sasha MSNing me about Sydney's bday put the thought in my brain. While @ pur, Leap_frog and I looked at each other and thought, what the heck. I was el-sicko, and she had to work all Saturday, but how can you resist the call of house music and fellow house-addicts?
Damn you Sasha! (and thank you, hahaha)
So as I said, the evening started out @ Pur Supper club (chk the review here: Link! and the event listing here: Link!
We wanted to make guest list at Footwork, so had to depart a little early from Pur, as much as it tore me, because I was really looking forward to hearing more of Floorwhore's set.
We lined up, and I was startled to discover my own stupidity--i had left my jacket in the car! And not forgotten it, but intentionally left it there to avoid coat check, because I'm a cheap bastard. Well, my friends, let me tell you that I will NOT be a cheap bastard in the future. I froze my doo-dads off. Holy moly.
That being said, what a GREAT crowd in the line up!! We met so many people while in line. We met a group from Kitchener who were celebrating a bday (happy birthday Jamie!). They couldn't remember my name, so they just called me 'Keswick' (where i'm from).
Inside, we met up with some familiar faces!

No. That's not deko-ze. That's discoooooooooo!

Lea found Anas Atttia and snagged a picture as well!

Let me take this opportunity to point out that Anas Attia has been faithfully producing some SOLID mixes... most recently, Dirty House Mix Volume 2, which is an EXCELLENT example of solid mixing. I really hope to hear this guy in some clubs around town SOON. Great personality and great mixing skills. Grab his house mix 2 set from this thread:Link!!

That's a picture of me and a friend Sasha introduced to me, but to my shame I cannot recall her name---apologies! Edit: Her name was Alisa! I was showing everyone my proud copy of Dirty House 2.
Ok, so what about the music? I'm glad you asked.
What can I say? DJ: TK. WOW. Where did this gal come from?! I heard her first at Jaxx house 2, and didn't realize who it was until Leap_frog pointed it out later--loved her track selection and mixing then, and certainly had a BLAST rocking it out to her first thing in the night. Someone said to me that she loves techno, so her house mixing is a little harder. That's FINE by me, wow, the beats were POUNDING!

Definitely hit up her web site and check out her mixes online Link!!. Her sets on there are sic--nice, fast, pounding beats. I found an awesome dance partner, and we totally pounded out the beats and cleared a spot on the dance floor. Great to find someone with such a similar style of dancing to me. GREAT energy _tamiko!_ !

Leap snagged a picture with her outside, thanking her for a great set:

I was sorry to miss her bday bash, but this certainly made up for it. That's 2 for 2 with DJ: TK for me, both times, she rocked my socks. 10/10! Very gracious off the decks too, i thanked her afterwards on the dance floor, and she was very approachable. Thanks TK!
At this time Sydney got up the decks, and it was like fresh rain:

I'll be completely honest here, and I stress that this is purely personal opinion, but Sydney hasn't been doing it for me lately. I find that it may be because she generally plays a lot of electro, and the venues i've been at lately, she has been opening, so i haven't caught her at peak hours. However. Last night. WOW. What's with this? First I get pounded by DJ: TK, THEN sydney buries me, completely. She put out some tech-prog-chunky stuff that had me jumping around tamiko like a football bunny. yes. A football one. I have no idea. No, i don't know what that would look like.

I be slidin' to da left... slidin' to da right... Tamiko!! What fun!
Nemo came along too, and was none at all regretful. The vibe in that room was amazing... it was PACKED to the max, one of the most packed nights i've been to for footwork. Incredible. The happiness guage was huge, with everyone in a great mood. I must have met like, 30 people that night.

Edit: Time for a funny story.
So, everyone knows how i get when i dance. I jump around like a holigan, lovin' it. Often, the pigeon on crack dance comes out, though I have shelved that recently in order to save my neck muscles. The point is, i get pretty warm, and sweaty. So there I am, in the washroom doing my drawers back up, and i go to pull my belt tight--it's leather, so my hand just SLIPPED right off! my hand goes flying and 'thumps' the guy peeing beside me. "I'm SO sorry man!! Let me buy you a drink!!" He was very kind to me though, and instead of putting my head into the urinal said 'no problem man, if you made me pee on myself, then i would have been mad, but it's all good.' Whoever you were: Sorry about that man. Next time, i'll be so much more careful, lol. I couldn't imagine if that happened at the zone. :blueeek:
Meanwhile, Sydney was BANGIN' out this sound that I was just lovin', with relatively little electro, and slammin' bass.

Psiico made an appearance as well--his first time to Footwork. Wonder how he liked it? We dragged him with us from Pur. Behind him, an autobot. Robots in disguise. They look like humans!!!

I took many breaks out to the 'smoking area' to cool off and get fresh air (found random non-smokey spots to breeeeaaathe in). Out there, ran into RandomDoug and FrankieT!! These guys always provide such a great vibe and conversation regarding the scene. It was good to get some more scoop on the goings-ons in the club industry, as removed as I am. Anas Attia joined us out there too, giving FrankieT some CDs to share about. What can I say? It's a great community, and the support for local DJs is absolutely great.

I look like I'm up to no good:

All of a sudden, the music stopped, and happy birthday chorus broke out... the whole club sang happy birthday to sydney blu. I was voiceless (el-sicko), but still tried to yell out the lyrics. Happy birthday Sydney!!

I have to say, this is in the top three sets I've heard from Sydney. The other two being: 1. New Years 2006, the first time I heard her spin live, @ the guv, and 2. beginning her residency at footwork earlier this year. When this gal is on, she's ON. Track selection, mixing, energy, it's there. I have to catch her more during peak hours instead of opener sets, or electro nights. Don't get me wrong, i enjoy electro, but it doesn't speak to me as other genres do. REALLY liked the remix of People Are Still Having Sex (heard it at the zone last week too). Bangin'.
After Sydney wrapped up her awesome set, this gentleman stepped up to the decks:

Introducing, Patrick Dream, resident from Parking Nightclub in Montreal. I have to say, after TK and Sydney, this guy had a TOUGH act to follow. Not to say that it's a competition, or that each set should be compared directly to another, but this night, the vibe was so high, and the music so banging, that I could detect the crowd easily being picky about how they were to be treated by the DJ. That might be why he seemed to stick mostly to the upper-underground-mainstream (HA! now THAT'S a genre) tunes that we all know and love. I didn't hear too much experimentation, but the tunes were solid (ol' faithfuls) and the mixing was crisp.
I can't comment on Patrick's set fully, as we left around 4. There was STILL a lineup coming in at 4 am. WOW. Talk about N-R-G. Great job on the promotion, promoters, and obviously the DJs have a solid following that wanted to support the celebrations.
As a parting picture.... my photographer:

I took the night off.
Conclusion
For a light night, this turned out to be a surprise rah-rah that i was thrilled to be a part of. Special hellos to Edith <3, Aubrey and Chris! Hahah, that was so top40 of me. I SHOULD note there were some minor technical difficulties with the sound; some speakers were kicking in and out, and at one point, the treble made me want to cry for my mom. That was a minor distraction though, and the night pounded on!!
That's my review.
Can't wait to see your pictures, Sasha!
