Zidane now claims Materazzi repeatedly ripped on his mother, who is ill, and his sister - Zidane interview story
I think people are really blowing this out of proportion. There are always ugly incidents in every sporting event. The thing is that now, the media creates a circus surrounding it.
As for the cards, that's FIFA and the refs faults. I really don't think that the players were playing more violently and committing more fouls, but FIFA wanted the refs to bring down the hammer with the cards and as a result ruined the tournament. When you already have record numbers of both yellow and red cards with 10 games still left in the tournament, something's wrong.

To be honest, diving has always been a part of the game, though. Maybe it's gotten worse, but once the ball gets rolling with the incessant replays and the internet footage that's constantly available, it definitely makes it look worse. I forsee FIFA having to bring in some sort of video system, just because the people who watch the games have it. When bad calls are made or dives occur, we all know it now, and that undermines what people think of the outcome.

Re: Sour Football?

Ok, I'm not sure if this was already discussed in one of the many WC threads, but I'm wondering as to the opinions of the members of NYTA as many of us enjoy soccer almost as much as dance music (you know, EDM and futbol go together quite well). I've been privy to watch many debates as to whether or not the latest WC outcomes were deserved or not, and have heard a great deal of disturbing facts. And so the below long post is an example of my reaching out and wondering what the group of you think as to the future of the game --- please read as much as you can...
I can't seem to find any information on this online, but a freind of mine just told me that the Italian player who was hit by Zidane at that game was saying negative things about Zidane's wife and mother... now, I by no means condone what Zidane did (though it was an interesting way to end your WC...), but don't you guys think that this is a bit uncool? I have my own opinions on the outcome of the WC and on Zidane's conduct, but I'd rather not discuss them here (I actually think that the ref. acted in opposition to FIFA rules by giving him the card), but I'm wondering what you think about where the future of futbol is going, especially when such unfortunate situations as Zidane's conduct and, earlier, Rooney's conduct. Unpleasantness has always been an issue, though often it stayed in the stands and did not touch the pitch until after the game was over --- but as of late it seems that international play (I'm also talking about recent freindlies) is becoming more and more confrontational as personal conflicts are taking the feild.
This even stretches into the realm of coaching and administration, with intra-team conflicts keeping some of the world's best players (Jerzy Dudek and Rude van Nistelrooy are the most stunning examples) off of the feild. That, coupled with the number of cards and bad calls during this cup (and the ridiculousness of the 2002 one) makes it seem like the game has almost soured. I'm just wondering what you guys think --- what has happened to the 'beautiful game'? |
do you play soccer?
I have played my entire life, 4 years in college, been to South America, Europe, and I can say that this is nothing new. That happened to be the World Cup Final (the most watched single sporting event in the world) and Zidane headbutted some guy and got sent off. This is nothing new at all. So the Italian player insulted his mother? I have heard much worse things than that in my college games. Is it Uncool? sure. Its a fucking battle out there though man. They were playing for the utlimate prize in soccer, Zidane was tired and frustrated, and his adrenaline was pumping. But lets not get caried away. The "beautiful game of soccer" isn't heading for it's apocalypse quite yet.
