Still inside the farm near Kipling, Sask., with Whitmore was Jordan Bruyere, 14, although police said they had been assured the second boy was okay. Police used a robot to deliver a cellphone to Whitmore. "Our emergency response team negotiators are currently negotiating with Mr. Whitmore and the goal here is that we have a safe resolution to this incident and that everybody comes out of it safe," said RCMP Sgt. Tammy Patterson. She said Jordan, who was reported missing in Brandon, Man., on July 22, was fine. "As far as we know Jordan is doing okay. Healthwise he is okay in there."The break in the massive manhunt for Whitmore came earlier yesterday when a Kipling resident checked out an abandoned farm next door and found Whitmore's Dodge Caravan. Pat Beaujot said he spotted tracks in the yard, and then a garage door that appeared to have been recently opened. "I pulled the garage door open and at first I didn't see the van, but I saw some Kentucky Fried Chicken boxes and some bones," he said. "Then I looked around the corner and I saw the van with the wood-grained siding. I knew I was onto it, so I just got out of there and jumped into my truck." Beaujot drove home, told his wife to call police and then drove back to a spot where he could watch the farmhouse. He said police got there within about 20 minutes, and that while he and officers were talking, Zachary ran out from some brush south of the yard. Zachary was "doing well and happy to be safe" and has been reunited with his family, police added. At the Miller residence in Whitewood last night, a man who identified himself as a family friend said everyone was "upbeat and things are looking good."A police SWAT team set up a perimeter around the farmhouse and began the negotiations with Whitmore in the evening. Police had issued a Canada-wide warrant for Whitmore after Zachary disappeared Sunday night from Whitewood, 60 kilometres north of Kipling. They had also been searching for Jordan, who is from Winnipeg. Questions remain about how the convicted pedophile eluded police for roughly three weeks, and why Winnipeg police didn't identify Whitmore as Bruyere's abductor more quickly or issue an Amber Alert when the boy vanished. What is known is that Whitmore left his Chilliwack, B.C., home and visited Morinville, Alta., where he has a brother, between June 2 and 5. Whitmore was required to regularly report to local police, according to the high-risk-offender warning issued by RCMP in the St. Albert-Morinville area at the time. Whitmore returned to British Columbia shortly after June 5. Cpl. Wayne Oakes, an RCMP spokesman in Alberta, didn't know the exact date. Whitmore was under a peace bond, which placed strict limitations on his movements, until it expired in mid-June. Under Section 810 of the Criminal Code, courts can place limits on ex-convicts after they've served their full sentences. Daniel Brodsky, Whitmore's former lawyer, said he understands that the RCMP in Alberta received a report from the Chilliwack police recommending the peace bond be extended under its existing conditions. However, Brodsky said a second report, from the community supervisor, reported Whitmore was "doing extraordinarily well." Brodsky said either the peace bond wasn't extended in time or there were never plans to renew it. "I do not know which of those two things it was," he said. Whitmore then went back to the Morinville area "sometime after the 12th of June" when his peace bond expired, Oakes said. The RCMP believes Whitmore returned to Morinville on June 15 or 16, Oakes said. During that second visit to Morinville, RCMP officers in British Columbia contacted Whitmore "for a period of time" before those communications abruptly stopped "around the end of June," he said. Oakes said police tried to persuade Whitmore to voluntarily enter into a new peace bond. He was supposed to appear in court on June 29 but didn't show up, Oakes said. The RCMP "made every effort to try to contact him," Oakes said. It's unclear where Whitmore went after leaving Morinville. CBC reported yesterday the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said he lived in Topsail, Nfld., for at least a week in July. Const. Jackie Chaput of the Winnipeg Police Service said Whitmore was a construction worker in Winnipeg sometime during the time RCMP in Alberta lost contact with him and July 22, when he went on the run with Bruyere in Brandon. Chaput said that's where Bruyere's stepfather, Al Balantyne, met Whitmore, who introduced himself as "Robert Summer." Whitmore quickly befriended the family and accompanied the 14-year-old and Balantyne on a trip to Brandon in July. Whitmore apparently claimed he'd left $2,000 in Winnipeg and asked Balantyne to retrieve it. Balantyne agreed and returned home, leaving the 14-year-old alone with Whitmore.
