I made a mashup of two tracks that might be worthwhile to seek a release...but I don't know how this works. I mean, I know I have to contact the original label companies, but how does all the legal stuff work out?

You can't release a mashup. You just can't. If you do, tell me, so I can eat my own hat.
Ive seen plenty of tracks released that were mash ups, i.e. david guetta VS the egg - Love dont le me go & Layo & Bushwacka Vs Kings Of Tommorow - Finally A Love Story.

He got (and probably paid for) the rights to do so.
I could be wrong but by going by other release's if the legal stuff, rights etc is all sorted with labels and artists it can be released. Can anyone who has some good knowledge shed some light? Not that I'd wanna release a mash up anyway but its good to know how it all works.

its really all about the rights. you need a license from the owner labels, from each one. (or directly the artist). you have exclusive and non exclusive licenses.
if you dont have the license to release the track, you do it illegally.

You CAN release a mashup, a friend of mine does alot and he even got one featured one 6 compilation cds. But mostly when a mashup gets released it's on a white label. So you have to find a label who wants to do that. But you do can release a mashup... You indeed have to contact the artists and the label cause they have the first and (most likely) the exclusive rights. Talk with them... I dont think you can make money with mashups, if thats you're intention. It's a good way for promoting yourself. But if the label thinks they can get money out of it, they shure want to release it.
