what is the next big genre?

There is alot of talk on the forums now about electro being on top of the EDM world, and also much complaining that electro has peaked and is now declining in quality. I notice people tend to prefer to follow these genres when their trendiness is starting to build and then dump them as soon at they peak in their popularity. This seemed to happen with trance in the late 1990's, then prog when I first joined the site and then electro in 2002. It leaves me wondering what is the genre that is gaining momentum at the moment. What is building its way up now towards eventually replacing electro as the new big EDM sound.

I am not so vain as to follow these genre trends, I still haven't "grown out" of trance. I don't really care which style has the most coolness at the moment, but I like to be aware of what is going on around me.

So which genre(s) is gaining momentum? obviously there are people sticking with prog the same way I have stuck with what is left of trance, and I'm sure there will be plenty of people still staying with electro. I don't like to ally myself to any single genre really, I'm kinda all over the place but my collection ends up being half trance half everything else.

I am really interested in all your opinions on this, I hope we can keep this discussion informative rather than arguing, lets try to compile some ideas before we start arguing please.

Minimal is the next big buzzword. In two years, everything will be "minimal". Guaranteed.

Anybody remember who the group was that made a song that was just silence, whose fans then caused a big stink with Itunes to be able to buy the track, since they hadn't made it available before?

minimal eh?

I guess I have noticed a bit of momentum towards minimal stuff. Do you(as in everybody, not just ishkur) think all the present and past minimal people will bitch about what the increase in popularity has done to ruin their scene and their music the way every other genre's first adopters has acted after their surge in trendiness?

A bit of minimal might be good for the people around me, everything here seems to strive to be as obnoxious as possible, I think it would be good for us if people took up a minimal aesthetic, but I imagine people are gonna go overboard with it, we always do.

Anyone have a different prediction, or anything intresting to say about these transitions between genres?

Anything can be overdone. The reason a lot of people bitch about mainstream killing their old favorites is because they get overloaded. It's just too much of a good thing...coupled with the influx of sub-par stuff that a mainstream fad can support, but which wouldn't have had the substance to survive a market funded by afficianados. The latter is what all the lifers wind up bandying about as the cause of the demise, but it comes from both.

Next big genre will be whatever I end up liking the most... as there will be a next big genre for everyone, as it should be anyways.

If you're talking popularity in terms of numbers... not a clue really, maybe tech house?.

yeah, in terms of groups, of industry buzz, of the shit you are likely to hear people saying when you go out partying, not just the little world in your head.

All the magazines and stuff were shouting about minimal last year, is there something on the horizon building up right now which will emerge as dominant after minimal? Something hasn't been all over the mags for a year yet?

The number one google result for "minimal dance music" is this dj mag article from last year which is titled "Is Prog Dead?" and talks about digweed, why do all the friggin genre migrations revolve around digweed?

house...

That answer is a bit too broad don't you think? Just pick an umbrella label that like 30% of the music in question falls under, and you have a good shot at predicting it but surely there will be plenty of house which won't be gaining dominance any time soon, I would like a more specific answer than "house".

but then again, I guess "minimal" is pretty broad too, maybe house is a satisfactory answer
