Finding Trance?

There have most likely been many posts about this before, but how do ya'll find your trance (or EDM in general)? Like what do you do when you sit down at your computer on a regular day? how would you go about finding the latest in what your taste is? Cuz i find myself listening to a ton of music and then coming out with only a few songs or sets that i actually enjoy and the rest i end up giving the cold shoulder? A lot of ppl tell me that's half the fun with EDM . Anway, thx ahead of time!

Yeah discogs is an awesome site, but they don't have like a search engine where you can specify date/genre/new release/etc kinda thing. All you get is the choice of whether to search for the artists or the release.

Check the latest releases & keep an eye on the download charts on your usual legal download sites.

HTFR has horrible quality audio samples & only sells vinyl but has a large selection so well worth having a quick sniff round there regularly.

Always worthwhile checking a few artists sites once in a while too as they often have samples of their latest work. By doing that I recently bought a couple of blinding tracks from Alex M.O.R.P.H that I'd missed otherwise (Oree orig mix & Heavenly instru dub).

I go through the catelog on sites that let you buy the music, usually the ones I buy from.

www.dancerecords.com
www.4djsonly.com
www.beatport.com

etc... There are so many sites out there. I usually go through www.dancerecords.com since its one of the better US sites and then go to 4djsonly to get the full song sample to listen to before I place my order at DanceRecords. But yeah, that is how I get to listen to most of my EDM and keep up with it.

- Browsing downloadshops (listening to previews)
- listening to radioshows

Discogs is not very helpful in finding new tracks, cause they don't have a listen feature etc.
Furthermore it sometimes takes very long until a release appears in the database.

Forums also can be useless, cause everybody says "hey! that track rox" - "how can it rock ? It's utter crap and overrated" - "stfu! you obviously don't know what trance is"
You get the point...
BUT in forums you can browse tracklists and indeed look what's successful at the moment and what many people like, so you might check the stuff out...

What yo gotta do, is pretend yer a DJ, even with all the new download shops the systems for bringing EDM to the casual consumer are really poor. So you do like these other guys do, you go to these online sites and listen to the samples then track down the tunes you like. You can follow charts and stuff, but this music is not about following what other people like, rather following what YOU like, it is so much interesting mingling with fans of this music when everybody is into something that the other has not heard before.

What helps alot is if you have some parties you enjoy visiting, try to remember the tunes you enjoy, hum them into your answering machine or something, then you can guess the category, go through all those samples, and chances are you will find the tune you liked, and if all else fails you can get somebody here to ID your tune for you by posting yer phone message.

You can do the same thing with radio or internet streams, even easier with thsoe cuz the broadcasters can usually ID what you hear.

But the general theme is, you hear alot of stuff, some of it really grabs you, and you track it down so you can keep it with you for whenever you want to hear it again. We do all this classification and talk to help each other along the way to finding this stuff, good luck, share what you like, that is all we can really do, think for ourselves, and share.

I'm currently in the process of listening to every trance track on the audiojelly.com/ database and then d/l the ones I like.

I also browse dancerecords.com/ for some harder to find stuff and then try to d/l on mp3 d/l sites or I search discogs and see if and what album it's on. I usually use gemm.com/ to buy trance cds and sometimes ebay or amazon. One thing is for sure, I will never use Euromusicworld.com again - took all summer for my 2 trancemaster albums to ship, thank god I didn't pay $15 for the overnight shipping cause it wouldn't have mattered, it took 2 1/2 months to ship in the 1st place.

Also sometimes I listen to di.fm/ radio as they play good stuff sometimes.
